Every year, New York Women in Communications, the premier organization for female communications professionals, hosts the Matrix Awards. The prestigious award is only given to eight women a year and celebrates their extraordinary accomplishments and contributions to the communications industry. I was lucky enough to attend this inspiring event and hear firsthand from these powerful women, and their advice for how to be successful in the industry is a must-hear for any marketing and communications professional. Read on to see some of my favorite stand-up-and-cheer moments from their acceptance speeches.

Padma Lakshmi

Padma Lakshmi stands at a glass podium in a red suit. The quote over here reads: “I want to encourage every woman out there to seek out a woman who you’ve always admired and ask for mentorship. There is a place for all of us at the table.”

Padma is often known for her gig as host and executive producer of the show “Top Chef,” but she’s also a best-selling author, culinary expert, and ambassador for ACLU Immigration & Women’s Health and the United Nations Development Programme.

Kate Lewis

Kate Lewis stands at a glass podium in a beige dress with colorful cloud-like stripes. The quote over here reads: “Say to yourself, ‘I deserved this. I earned this.’ Remember that you are worthy of the honors bestowed upon you.”
After first coming to Hearst as a vice president of content operations and editorial director for Hearst Magazines Digital Media, it only took five years for Kate Lewis to become Heart Magazines Chief Content Officer, combining both the brand’s digital and print efforts.

Jeanine Liburd

A picture of Jeanine sits in the upper right hand corner, while a quote in the lower left hand corner reads: “Do you want people interrupting you... or do you want people to see you and value you for who you are? As an industry we have to do better.”
After a frustrating stint in public policy in D.C, Jeanine Liburd made the switch to media and television to be on the ground floor of where people where most engaged. Now with Viacom for 19 years, she currently serves as the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for BET Networks.

Susan Magrino

In the upper right hand corner, there is a headshot of Susan Magrino (blonde hair, white background), in the lower left hand corner there is quote from her that reads: “Take the opportunity, take the risk. Even if you’re not sure you can ace it, someone will be there to help you along the way.”
At the age of 30, Susan Magrino started her own eponymous agency, Magrino PR. She built her firm from the ground up and created an impressive client roster, including Martha Stewart and Whispering Angel wine – making her an industry legend.

Norah O’Donnell

Norah O'Donnell stands in a teal suit, smiling at something in the distance while clapping. A quote next to her reads: .
As co-host of “CBS This Morning” and now newly minted host of “CBS Evening News,” Norah O’Donnell is known as one of the most trusted and respected journalists in the world. She’s traveled the globe conducting exclusive interviews with powerful leaders and received numerous awards for her groundbreaking reports.

Kathy Ring

In the upper right hand corner there is a headshot of Kathy Ring (blonde hair, black shirt, white background), while in the lower left hand corner there is a quote from her that reads: “There is no one right path for your life. Choose your own life and curate those experiences.”
Kathy Ring understands the concept of climbing the corporate ladder – she lived it. Her career started as a media buyer/planner for Stacom and, after years of hard work and determination including opening the company’s Los Angeles operation, she became the CEO of Starcom USA.

Lisa Sherman

Lisa stands on stage in a sleek white suit, with a glass podium and purple sign and background behind her. The quote next to her reads: “I can’t promise you everything will go exactly as planned. But I do know this: the world will be a better, richer, more honorable and dynamic place with you bringing 100% of YOU to it.”
From her previous role launching the groundbreaking LGBTQ network LogoTV at Viacom to her current role as President and CEO of the Ad Council, Lisa has always believed in the power of authentic storytelling to drive change and inspire action.

Sally Susman

In the upper right hand corner, Sally's headshot (blue jacket, blonde hair, woodsy background), while in the lower left hand corner, there is a quote from her: “Find your voice. Your voice is the source of your power.”
Her resume boasts her experiences overseeing European Corporate Affairs for American Express and being Executive Vice President of Global Communications for Estee Lauder, but it’s her 12-year stronghold as Pfizer’s Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer that has garnered her national acclaim. In her role at Pfizer, Sally Susman leads 250 employees in all things Communications, Government Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility.
