Mass shootings, the mentally ill make easy targets. Every time a mass shooting happens, and one happens on average every day in the US (mass shooting is defined as one shooter and at least four victims), the knee jerk reaction by many politicians is to blame the mentally ill. Can you say scapegoat? It's much easier to do that than buck the NRA, risking losing their donations and their endorsement. I know what you're thinking, if you're in one particular party, "guns don't kill people, people do." Be that as it may, all countries have mentally ill, and we're the only country with a mass shooting per day. And, only 5% of gun deaths are by someone who is diagnosed as mentally ill, and in most cases, there is only one victim, themselves. Only 2% of mass shootings involve someone who is diagnosed as mentally ill. That said, this is the counter argument. Anyone who would kill another human, is by definition mentally ill. And I understand how comforting that is to the neuro- normal people who utter that, however, it doesn't stand up to scrutiny. People kill other people everyday, for a variety of reasons, greed, jealousy, and in the case of El Paso and many of the other recent incidents, ideology. More and more it's disaffected, angry, male, white nationalist terrorists, who believe that we're being invaded by one group with the help of another. These men, at least the majority of them, are not mentally ill, they're just angry rubes.
