Lyme Disease and Other Viruses Revisited

Tick and Lyme disease season is here, and scientists warn this year could be the worst ever. That is why when we found out that Dr. Richard Horowitz had a new well-researched book, How Can I Get Better? An Action Plan for Treating Lyme and Other Chronic Diseases(2017, St. Martin's Press), we asked for an interview.

An emerging global pandemic

Due to climate change, the United States National Science Foundation has declared Lyme disease to be an emerging global pandemic. Warmer temperatures are causing ticks to emerge three weeks earlier with longer reproduction times. They also contain antifreeze proteins that help ticks withstand harsh winters.

Why it is getting worse

Ticks are now carrying many more bacteria, viruses, and parasites, including new deadly infections. Some of these include Powassan, which causes encephalitis, found in the Eastern and Western United States, Heartland and Bourbon viruses, found in the Midwest, the malarial-like parasite Babesia, and more. And the worst news is that blood testing for Lyme disease will not pick up some of these tick-borne co-infections.

Horowitz calls Lyme "The Great Imitator"

Lyme can mimic lots of other diseases: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (3.5 percent of Americans), Fibromyalgia (1.5 percent of Americans), autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), dementia and psychiatric disorders like depression, anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and even Schizophrenia.

Symptoms people may look for with Lyme

Often misdiagnosed due to the unreliability of blood tests and multiple species of bacteria, Lyme disease causes symptoms that come and go with acute and chronic fatigue, migratory muscle, joint pain and nerve pain, memory and concentration problems, sleep disorders and a broad range of psychiatric symptoms.

It is not just Chronic Lyme

Horowitz has discovered 16 reasons why people remain chronically ill (outlined in the book). Many of the factors Horowitz is seeing cause inflammation, like multiple chronic infections, environmental toxins, difficulty eliminating toxins due to an overloaded detoxification system, poor diet (eating allergic foods, mineral deficiencies), and lack of sleep. Once the overlapping factors causing inflammation are correctly addressed, most patients enjoy marked improvement.
