One doesn't think that coffee is a cleanser, however, it is when it comes to our liver as long as it's delivered in a certain way. It must be real coffee and not decaf. The delivery system is through one's colon in the form of retention coffee enemas or infusions. Now that's for a real wake-me-up! Some people are affected by the caffeine so it is best to do this treatment early in the day.

Max Gerson, MD (1881-1959) is credited with developing a migraine diet that cleared skin tuberculosis, heart disease, kidney failure and finally cancer. He also used a caffeine solution to open the bile ducts, stimulate the production of bile in the liver and was a general detoxification regimen, particularly carcinogenic toxins. He noted that patients could dispense with painkillers once on coffee enemas, had a calming effect and could relieve constipation.

Coffee enemas appeared as early as 1917 and published in the Merck Manual until 1972. Independent scientific work gives credence to the benefits of coffee enemas. Kahweol and cafestol palmitate, substances found in coffee, promote the activity of a key enzyme system glutathione S-transferase. Dr. Lee Wattenberg and his colleagues in 1981 conducted this research. This enzyme group is responsible for neutralizing free radicals, harmful chemicals now commonly implicated in the initiation of cancer.

In mice, for example, these systems are enhanced 600 percent in the liver and 700 percent in the bowel when coffee beans are added to the mice's diet. Stimulation by coffee of glutathione S-transferase in humans is probable since the lab models are close, if not directly analogous to that of humans.

Theophylline and theobromine, two other chemicals in coffee, dilate blood vessels and counter inflammation of the gut; the palmitates enhance the enzyme system responsible for the removal of toxic free radicals, and the fluid of the enema stimulates the visceral nervous system to promote peristalsis and elimination of diluted toxic bile in a bowel movement.

Coffee enemas are safe when used with these dietary guidelines:

* Low sodium, high potassium: returns cell macromolecules to normal configuration and improves water structuring and water content.

* High micronutrient dense fruits, vegetables, whole grains: supply all nutrients necessary for cell respiration and energy production.

* Potassium salts: frequently provided by apples to improve the Kreb cycle.

* Protein restriction: aids in reduction of cellular edema.

* Thyroid support, Lugol's solution: multiplication of mitochondria, enhance cell oxidation of sugars, ATP production.

Benefits of coffee enemas or infusions

a) increase glutathione S-transferase,

b) reduce serum toxins and eliminate chronic challenge to damaged normal cells, c) improve cell potassium ion content,

d) reduce cell sodium content, thus reduce cell swelling through improved water structuring,

e) increase cell mitochondria count and activity, and

f) supply micronutrients necessary for cell energy production and repair.

Well that certainly is an impressive list of benefits from such a simple addition to one's health routine. An enema is generally a quart of liquid, an infusion is just 2 – 4 ounces. To make this an easy process, let me share with you a way to accomplish this in just a few minutes.

One can purchase organic instant coffee crystals at health food grocery stores, as well as 4 ounce enema bottles (usually filled with saline) at the local drug store. Empty the contents of the enema bottle and fill with 2 tablespoons coffee crystals. Add 2 ounces of water and set the bottle in a cup of hot water to warm to body temperature. If it's too cool, it will cause the rectum to spasm and encourage elimination. If it's too hot, well, we know how hot coffee can scald our mouth, so just use it comfortably warm.

Lie on your left side with an old towel or some paper towels under your bottom, gently insert the tip and empty the contents into the upper portion of ones rectum. Turn on your back and relax for a few minutes. Coffee is absorbed into the blood stream through the portal vein and will stimulate the liver in the first 8 seconds. It will continue this for 20 minutes. If you can't hold it for 20 minutes, that's ok. Even 5 minutes has a wonderful effect on the liver.

Many who are struggling with severe illness and choose to use a natural approach (sometimes with allopathic treatment too) find daily treatments important. Others who just want to increase their vitality use this once per week. We clean the outsides of our bodies with showers and shampoo, so consider cleaning the insides with other kinds of therapies. And enjoy your "cup of coffee."
