After my recent keynote at the
Texas Bankers Association HR Conference, I had the pleasure of meeting one of my new community banker friends, John Byrd, AVP of Human Resources at TrustTexas Bank.
John and I had a thoughtful conversation about leadership, employee engagement, and what makes people choose to stay with an organization. He shared an article he had written for
SHRM, entitled “
Leadership Goes Beyond Making Decisions and Giving Directions,” and it reinforced something I believe wholeheartedly.
Leadership isn’t about giving orders. It’s about building trust.
The best leaders don’t simply make decisions. They create an environment where people feel heard, valued, and supported. They communicate with empathy, coach instead of command, and understand that every interaction shapes an employee’s experience.
Retention is not an HR Metric
As I shared in my
Recruit to Retain in the Age of AI keynote, retention isn’t an HR metric. It’s the accumulated result of every interaction employees have with an organization.
That journey begins with recruiting, grows through culture, and is strengthened every day by leaders who develop people instead of simply managing them.
Technology can help us work faster. Human connection is what makes people stay.
Thank you, John, for the inspiring conversation and for continuing to shine a light on the importance of authentic leadership. Wishing you continued success as you help build a workplace where people and your organization thrives.
