Two More Panels Set for the TALKERS Los Angeles New Media Seminar.

As the forthcoming Los Angeles installment of TALKERS magazine's New Media Seminar nears an early sellout, two more dynamic panel discussions have been added to the growing power-packed agenda.  "The Modern Pioneers" will feature (in alphabetical order): Sam Hasson, president and founder of LATalkRadio.com; Mike Horn, CEO and founder of CRN Digital Talk; Tom Leykis, president and founder of The New Normal; and LA-based national broadcasting legend Shadoe Stevens of Outlaw Radio.  A talk personality panel titled "The Challenges of Hosting in 2012" will feature (in alphabetical order):  Lars Larson of Compass Media Networks and KXL, Portland; Bill Handel of KFI, Los Angeles; Heidi Harris of KRLA, Los Angeles; Doug Stephan of  the "Good Day" morning show; and Alan Stock of KDWN, Las Vegas; with more to be announced.  The panel will be moderated by TALKERS managing editor/West Coast bureau chief Mike Kinosian.  Highlights of the event will include the presentation of the TALKERS magazine's annual "Woman of the Year" award to KFI/KTLK, Los Angeles program director Robin Bertolucci by last year's recipient, Stephanie Miller of WYD Media and Current TV.  Courtside Entertainment CEO and Westwood One founder Norm Pattiz will deliver the morning keynote address.  Noted talk radio consultant Holland Cooke will deliver a special presentation "Database your Tribe NOW!"  Other highlights include "The State of Local News/Talk Radio," with (in alphabetical order);  Robin Bertolucci, PD of KFI/KTLK, Los Angeles; Skip Essick, PD of KMJ-AM/FM, Fresno; Andy Ludlum, PD of KNX, Los Angeles; Garret Lewis, PD/morning host of KNST, Tucson; David Sniff, PD of KFMB, San Diego; and Chuck Tyler, PD of KRLA/KKLA, Los Angeles. It will be moderated by Kevin Casey, VP/executive editor, TALKERS.  The panel "Spoken Word Radio; The Big Picture" features (in alphabetical order): Phil Boyce, VP/director ,spoken word format, Salem Communications; Ron Hartenbaum, president, WYD Media;  Kraig Kitchin, CEO Sound Mind, LLC; and Mike McVay, senior VP/programming, Cumulus Media.  The moderator will be Michael Harrison, publisher, TALKERS.  Additional speakers include (in alphabetical order: Kevin LaRue, program director KSL, Salt Lake City; Don Martin, OM/GM, KLAC, Los Angeles and VP programming, Fox Sports Radio; Patt Morrison, host/commentator KPCC, Los Angeles/Southern California Public Radio; Ken Rutkowski, host of "Business Rock Stars," KFWB, Los Angeles; and Eric Stanger, vice president of operations, the Sean Hannity Show, Premiere Networks.  As those of you who have been following the development of this amazing conference know, the above is just the tip of the iceberg with a whole lot more scheduled.  The complete up-to-the-minute agenda will be posted tomorrow at Talkers.com.  In total, the seminar will feature more than 60 leading industry speakers who will examine the key issues facing the talk radio/media industries.  It will take place in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 11 at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm being presented by TALKERS in association with the Los Angeles Press Club.  To assure registration, attendees are advised to sign up now.  Registration is a recession-era low $99 which includes everything.  Because it is open only to working media there will be no online registration – only by telephone.  For registration and sponsorship information call 413-565-5413.

Media Ad Spending Flat in Q2; Radio Up 1.9%.

According to data from Kantar Media, media ad spending in the U.S. was basically flat in the second quarter of 2012 with an increase of 0.9% compared to the same period a year ago.  The first quarter had showed signs of improvement when ad spending grew 2.9%.  Radio, on the back of a double-digit increase in network radio spending (21.4%), grew by 1.9% compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Charlie Bernstein Joins Sports Talk WHBO, Tampa for PM Drive.

The Genesis Communications station announces Sports Media Interactive editor-in-chief is the new afternoon drive host at the Tampa sports talk outlet and Genesis' Sports Talk Florida.  Genesis VP of programming Len Weiner states, "Charlie promises to be a knowledgeable and entertaining show host.  His NFL contacts will bring insight from a perspective not being offered in the local market."

NPR Names Izzi Smith Director of Programming.

The public radio content creator announces Israel "Izzi" Smith becomes director of programming with the organization effective in November.  Smith, who will report to vice president of programming Eric Nuzum, has worked with NPR as a consultant over the past 15 years.  Nuzum says Smith has been involved with such programs as "'Radiolab,' PRX's 'The Moth Radio Hour,' 'State of the Re:Union with Al Letson,' and 'The Public Radio Talent Quest' with PRX and CPB.  Izzi is a true 'connector,' always trying to link good ideas, people, and stations to serve audiences in bigger, more inclusive ways."  Nuzum states Smith's primary responsibilities will be "working with all of our 'acquired' programs (those programs carrying the NPR name, but produced by partners—such as 'Fresh Air,' 'Snap Judgment,' 'On The Media,' and 'Car Talk') as well as with our on-air fundraising and promotion teams to improve our ability to help you serve your local audiences. He'll also prove invaluable to us as we continue to grow our program development efforts at NPR."



Yahoo! Sports Radio Debuts New Evening Show with Bob Ryan and Marty Tirrell.

The hour-long "Calling All Sports" program airs on the network from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm daily and features longtime Boston Globe sports columnist Bob Ryan – who recently retired from the venerable paper – and KBGG, Des Moines PM drive sports talk host Marty Tirrell.

Talk Radio Star Phil Hendrie Finding Success in Television.

TRN-FM nationally syndicated talk host Phil Hendrie is having a successful 2012 with projects away from the radio mic as well as with his radio program.  Hendrie, who has been involved in television and movies for more than a decade, is appearing in the new movie, "This Is 40," which follows the characters created in the 2007 film "Knocked Up" for Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann by writer and director Judd Apatow.  The movie hits theaters in December.  Hendrie has also had a recurring role in the TV sitcom "New Girl," he's appeared in the movie "Last Call" and does voice work for the animated version of "Napoleon Dynamite."

Rare Opportunities at Federated Media's WOWO-AM/FM, Fort Wayne.

Jon Zimney tells TALKERS magazine that there are two tremendous opportunities at Federated Media's heritage news/talk WOWO, Fort Wayne.  After the departure of OM and PM drive host Gregg Henson in August, Woody Zimmerman was named PD for the station.  But he's now been re-assigned to general manager of the company's Warsaw, Indiana cluster.  In the interim, Zimney, who serves as program director and news director at Federated's WTRC, South Bend – 95.3 Michiana's News Channel – is doing double duty programming both stations.  Additionally, WTRC morning host Casey Hendrickson is handling the PM drive duties at WOWO.  Federated Media is looking for two individuals to fill the PD and talk host positions at WOWO.  For the program director position, Zimney is looking for someone who can get the most out of talented talk show hosts and make them even better; has a strong understanding of local news and solid station programming; understands great news writing, presentation, and on-air execution; has a strong sense of news ethics and integrity; embraces and champions new technology in news (web, text, social media, video, etc); has examples of really good marketing, promotion and community involvement projects that they've conceived and executed.  For the talk host position, they are looking for "a personality who is well-rounded in politics, social issues and recognizes compelling stories that generate talk.  The ideal host is entertaining, informative and creative…can debate with listeners and guests in a spirited, but respectful manner, follows news like a hawk, expresses passion about local issues as well as national issues and also recognizes how everyday life can contribute to a show that is unique and compliments our winning lineup of Beck, Rush and Sean."  To apply for either position, e-mail materials to Jon Zimney at: jzimney@federatedmedia.com.
