Guidelines for Ice Safety

  • Lifesaving Resources wants to remind everyone that NO ICE IS SAFE ICE!

Winter came early this year and many lakes and ponds are already snow covered.  Although these sites may look attractive for snow-shoeing, skating, ice fishing, etc., Lifesaving Resources warns that these venues are extremely dangerous this time of year.  Because the lakes and ponds were just starting to freeze, the snow layer will now insulate the ice and prevent it from continuing to freeze.  Therefore, the integrity of the ice is now compromised.

Lifesaving Resources advocates the following to stay safe when on or near the ice:

  1. You need 4" - 5" of new, clear, hard ice before venturing out.
  2. When you do, carry ice picks which can be used to claw your way out of the water in the event you fall through.
  3. Carry a pea-less plastic whistle to alert others in the event of an emergency.
  4. Wear a life jacket or float coat if venturing over ice over deep water.
  5. Keep pets, especially dogs, under control and off the ice.

Last year, 75% of the ice emergencies occurred as a result of an animal falling through the ice and the incident escalated when humans attempted to rescue the animal.  In an emergency, immediately call 911 and only attempt to assist by performing a shore-based rescue by extending or throwing something to the person or animal from the safety of the shore.
