Each update of the iPhone operating system tends to increase the function and the battery usage. Screen brightness, and applications running in the background, are possible opportunities to save battery life.

In iPhone SETTINGS you can select BATTERY and see the percentage of battery being used by each of your applications. In my example on the right, my Cube application is using 66% of my battery life to track locations. I seldom use the function, so I will turn it off to save battery. RoboKiller is using 12%, which seems high, but I like the reduction in robo-calls I receive on my phone so it’s worth that to me. Ironically, my phone function is only using 1%.

Your list of applications and usage will look different than mine. You can decide how much battery use you are willing to give up for each function.

Additional opportunities to save battery include:

  • Performance of some apps may improve if they are up-to-date. Go to your App Store and update all your apps.
  • Reduce the number of Widgets on your Lock Screen. From the Lock Screen, swipe right and go to the bottom of the list and press EDIT. Remove any you do not need by pressing “-” and “Remove”.
  • (Also, see the blog on Wi-Fi and Cellular data background refresh).

Restart your iPhone by powering off and turning back on. Press and hold the Sleep-Wake button in the right side until “Slide to Power Off” appears on screen. Swipe to power off. When off, press Sleep-Wake button to power back on.
