There’s a woman on the CBS morning news in New York City (6-7 am weekdays) who basically reads a teleprompter as her job. She doesn’t look real. He face doesn’t move at all, only her lips and eyes. There is no other sign of expression. Her lips look inflated. Her eyes look like they were done by an artist. Her hair falls perfectly but also doesn’t move at all. She seems quite pleasant and reads the news well. I’d bet she’s charming and quite bright.
But she doesn’t look real.
Why do we want to go through life altering ourselves to conform to someone else’s norms? Why subordinate ourselves and our worth to what we are told is popular taste?
Think about that the next time you want to create yet another “motivational speech,” or put together still another PowerPoint presentation, or prepare your “performing seal” act for the important client meeting.
You’re worth most as you, not as a copy of someone else or of someone else’s idea of who you should be.
