The Georgetown Hoyas (2-1) had their way with the visiting Catholic University Cardinals (0-2), winning 69-0 at Cooper Field on Saturday September 14. The Hoyas scored 35 points in the second quarter, pulling away to a 53-0 lead in the first half. They dominated in every aspect, scoring 9 touchdowns while piling up 572 total yards to only 72 for the Cardinals. The Hoyas rushed for 353 yards compared to minus 8 for their opponents. It was the Georgetown’s first shutout in 13 years.
Georgetown scored in each of its first 9 drives. Joshua Tomas, Jackson Saffold and Max Edwards scored two touchdowns. One of Tomas’ TDs came on a 66 yard punt return. Joshua Stakely rushed for a career high 98 yards on eight carries, including a 50-yard score.
Gunther Johnson completed 4 of 8 passes for 177 yards including a touchdown. Joseph Brunell completed 8-of-9 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Joseph is the son of former NFL quarterback Mark Brunell.
The Cardinals would penetrate Georgetown territory only once, following a fumble recovery in the third quarter, and got as close as the Germantown 19 yard line before losing the ball on downs.
It was the first meeting between these crosstown rivals in 26 years in the battle for the Steven Dean Memorial Trophy, named in 1976 after former Georgetown team manager and Catholic sports information director Steven Dean. The award was established after Dean died of cerebral palsy in 1976. As NCAA Division III members, Georgetown and Catholic competed each year from 1977-92. The Hoyas and Cardinals will play again in 2022 at Cardinal Stadium and at Georgetown in 2023.
The Hoyas have outsored their opponents 112-3 in the last 2 weeks. Their next game will be at Columbia. Georgetown’s next home game will be at 2:00 PM on Oct. 12 vs. Fordham at Cooper Field.
