How Leaders can Create Long-Lasting Impact

John Register is a Paralympic silver medalist and motivational speaker. He went from being an elite athlete to having his left leg amputated after an accident. Despite this setback, he was able to find a “new normal” and continue on his path to success.

However, one of his challenges, and one of the challenges that many leaders face, is how to impact others in a long-lasting way. That’s because, to many of us, big impact = big effort. We believe that impacting others requires a ton of work, and that no one else can carry the load but ourselves. Kim Ades, President and Founder of Frame of Mind Coaching™, shares her thoughts on this below.


 
How to Increase Your Impact
John: [With speaking engagements], you’re talking about expanding the environment, expanding the room. I guess one question I have for you is, what would be your advice on, after you have turned the corner and you have had some successes, how do you think I could continue to create and expand momentum?

Kim: Professionally, you mean?

John: Yeah, professionally, also with speaking, because I’m not doing athletics anymore.

Kim: I’ll tell you. I work with high-profile leaders, CEOs, CFOs and highly driven entrepreneurs. You definitely fit in the highly driven category. One of the things that I always look at is, what do they want their life to be about? What is it that they want to achieve? And what I do for them is help them see that they do not have to be the one who is holding the world on their shoulders. That they can create infrastructure and systems that allow them to focus on what they do best. And in your case, it may be speaking, but it may be leading. Speaking and leading, while they fit very well together, aren’t necessarily one and the same thing.

So if you wanted to build your momentum − and to me, momentum means, how do I affect more people, how do I touch more people, how do I have a bigger reach − I would ask myself, “Are there programs that I can put in place that I personally don’t have to deliver?” Maybe I am the one who goes in and does that initial keynote presentation, but then I execute with a series of courses or workshops or a year-long program. I would start thinking about what the real impact is that I want to make.

Make Your Impact Long-Lasting
You and I, we’re similar in a way because we both speak. Every once in a while, I will get an email from someone three, four, five or ten years later saying, “Hey, I remember your presentation and it had a big impact on me,” but you want that to happen with every single person in the room, right?

So how do we increase their impact? And so the question I would ask you is, “What do you really want people to do? How do you really want people to embrace change? What are the actions that you want people to take after you leave?” And then create a program that allows you to make that happen.

John: Mm-hmm.

Kim: That’s where I would take you as a coach. What impact do you want to have in the world and how do we make that happen beyond the keynote? Because I have no doubt you’re amazing on-stage, but my feeling − and it’s just a gut instinct − is that you’re probably amazing beyond the stage, and that there’s more that you can deliver that has a deep, lasting impact. What do you think of that?

John: I think you’re pretty right in the ballpark. I call what I want to impact to “create more echoes.”

Kim: Yeah.

John: That’s what I want to create. People out there, like you said, they will call you five, six years later and they had some significant, life-changing alterations that they probably would never have had if they didn’t have that catalyst of a touch point. Not to say that the story is the one that actually causes the change, but there’s a touch point there that, whatever cycle they are in life, it was just the catalyst that caused them to shift.

Kim: Right. And we want more of that.

John: And I want more of that.

Impact

How Coaching Increases Impact
Having a big impact on your team and on your clients does not need to require a big effort, and it doesn’t even need to be done by you.
