How Do You Define ?Celebrity??

How Do You Define ?Celebrity??

I was recently asked this question and invited to share my thoughts on The Fame Fatale podcast, hosted by the very talented and clever Leslie Gornstein http://www.thefamefatale.com/ .   I love how she promos ?Episode 26: B-List cooties? on her site:

?Just how insecure is the average A-list celebrity? Assuming, of course, that the A-lister is really an A-lister? In my latest episode, celebrity wrangler Rita Tateel, that herder of very beautiful cats, dishes on how Hollywood truly defines a VIP in a city of so-called VIPs? and how celebrities tend to rank each other. (Hint: Too many B-listers can scare an A-lister away from an event. Cooties, you understand.)?

You can listen to the entire podcast by clicking on the link at the end of this blog, but here?s the CliffsNotes answer to the question.

A celebrity is anyone well known, in the public-eye, within their field of discipline.  This not only includes film, television, music, sports and fashion personalities, but can also include famous business tycoons, politicians, authors, famous chefs, astronauts and scientists as examples.

When I say ?public-eye? I?m referring to media coverage and the fact that there?s an audience who wants to know more about this person?and it?s the audience who will define whether someone is a celebrity or not.

If Ashton Kutcher showed up at a senior citizens home they would be grateful for the visitor, but very unlikely that anyone would know who he was and therefore, not a celebrity.  Conversely, if Connie Stevens attended a spring break event, she would not be a celebrity there, but the seniors would certainly remember ?Cricket? from ?Hawaiian Eye? among her other talents and credits from yesteryear.

But there?s a question which Leslie asked beyond the basic definition that digs even deeper. ?How big does my fan base have to be before you consider me a celebrity??  You can listen to my answer here, but what do you think?
