Mt. Freedom, NJ. July 8, 2012. Although this year's college graduates, all 1.7 million of them, face a stagnant job market, there are many steps students and graduates can take to increase their chances of landing a job.

Or so says Dr. Michael G. Zey, internationally-noted futurist and author in his newest article "College Class of 2012 Facing a Dismal Job Market" appearing on Examiner.com.

Dr. Zey, author of Ageless Nation, The Future Factor, and Seizing the Future, pulls no punches regarding the economy. Roughly the same number of  Americans are employed today as were employed in 2000, even while the population has grown by almost 35 million people. Gallup reports that close to 18%-20% of the adult population is either unemployed or underemployed. In June, a scarce 80,000 jobs were added to the US economy, and one-third of them were temporary jobs.

Since the current recession began, fewer than half of college grads from the classes of 2008 and later were able to secure employment within  a year of graduation, down from the normal 73 percent. In 2011 one out of two bachelor degree holders were unemployed or underemployed, more likely to become waiters, bartenders, cashiers, retail clerks, and food-service workers than acquire a management position or professional job.

In his interviews, lectures, workshops, and articles, Michael Zey describes steps students and graduates can take to increase their chances of landing the job of their choice. First, college students should choose their major carefully. There are more  job openings in science, technology, engineering, and math than in softer liberal arts fields. Second, students should start their job hunt early in their college careers, as early as the sophomore year. Third, the college student should look for internship opportunities as early as the junior year. Companies often hire their  when they graduate.

Current graduates, Dr. Zey advises, should move out of their comfort zone. Instead of just searching for jobs on the Internet, they should attend meetings and conferences in their fields. They should also use Linkedin, not just Facebook, to establish online career connections.

Even in the worst job market in decades, the best and the brightest who prepare adequately can land the job in the field of their choice.
