Houston, Texas (January 26, 2012) - Hundreds of parents, children, teachers and community leaders will rally in Houston on Saturday, January 28, celebrating the benefits of school choice.
The event, which is planned to coincide with National School Choice Week, will take place from 10:30 am to Noon at the KIPP West End public charter school (5402 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023).
Event sponsors – including Families Empowered, Teach for America Houston, the Houston Catholic Schools, KIPP Houston, Cristo Rey Jesuit Academy, Stand for Children Texas, the Texas Charter Schools Association, YES Prep, Parent Visionaries, and Chinquapin Preparatory School – seek to demonstrate that school choice is a bipartisan issue that impacts every Texas family.
KIPP Founder Mike Feinberg, Senator Dan Patrick, Representative Rob Eissler, and Lupita Hinojosa, the Superintendent of School Choice for the Houston Independent School District, will speak at the family-friendly event.
The event is free, open to the public, and will feature games for children, giveaway items, and refreshments. A voter registration table will be open to encourage citizens to have their voices heard at ballot boxes.
"It's time to raise the roof and tell everyone in Houston, in Texas, and across America that school choice is working in our city and that more children deserve access to the best schools possible," said Colleen Dippel, founder of Families Empowered. "School choice works because it focuses on children and families – not systems, and Houston is a perfect example of how school choice can transform a community for the better."
