We all get this moronic spam from people in distant lands which starts with, “I’ve been researching your web site, and you’re not getting enough attention. We can raise your SEO presence….” It’s really akin to all the Nigerian scams which have millions left to you by some relative who has vanished, and if you just them them a deposit…
There’s another form of this common on LinkedIn. Someone tells you they’d love to link because they’ve heard of you, read your work, or otherwise have some connections. Once you link they hit you up to contribute to one of their causes, or want free coaching. One guy was outraged when I told him if I responded to all the requests for free help I’d be doing it 100 hours a week. He told me he was very disappointed in me and “would tell everyone.”
Another guy told me I should help him because we were “peers.” When I asked how he figured that, he said we both belonged to LinkedIn. I asked him if he were a “peer” with everyone on the subscription list of magazines and newspapers he gets. He, too, then threatened to “tell everyone:” of my selfishness.
I do a lot of pro bono work and there are always people in my sessions on a full “scholarship.” Every time. But I never provide this help for people who demand it and feel they are entitled to it.
