1) More Guidelines & Research Out on Kid's Screen Time – How Should Parents Respond?

Parents are frequently faced with news articles related to the latest research data along with recommendations related to screen time use by chidden and teens. Also, various professional organizations publish new or revised guidelines suggesting appropriate limits for the use of digital devices for different age groups. Just last week the press carried news of the World Health Organization (WHO) releasing new guidelines recommending no screen time for all children under 2 and no more than one hour for children between two and four. These are similar to recommendations published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 2016. The news articles rarely define screen time and thus parents may think it only pertains to specific devices. However, these guidelines usually pertain to all devices including watching TV, movies, computers, video games, phones, and tablets. Most parents are busy and don't have time to devise a plan. Simply taking the devices away or insisting on strict time limits usually does not provide good results. In a recent article on Parenting Today, child psychologist Dr. Robert Myers outlines some of the most recent research and provides some suggestions for not just curtailing use but lifestyle changes consistent with the AAP guidelines. These suggestions are meant to apply to the entire family and promote more outdoor physical activity, more family interaction along with encouraging creative playtime for younger children and constructive actives for older children and teens.

2) Longevity Project set to tackle mental health across age spectrum by Matthew Bennett

As part of its annual Longevity Project, the Post Independent is set to embark on an enterprise series and events, titled "Striking a Conversation: Mental Health for All Ages." Last year's Longevity Project examined issues associated with the aging demographic in Garfield County, life expectancy rates and the active senior set here. This year's project will dive headfirst into the broader issue of mental health across the age spectrum as a cornerstone of living a long, productive life. The series will kick off Aug. 14, examining youth mental health issues, and in subsequent weeks will focus on different age ranges — teen/young adult, middle age and senior living — and what's being done in our area to address mental health across the age spectrum. "Throughout conversations in the past year, mental health keeps coming up as an issue," Post Independent Publisher Jerry Raehal said. "From rising suicide rates to homelessness, to how we treat each other at work and at home, mental health is a topic that is often overlooked as stigmatized."

6) "What to Do? That's what my highly successful client worried."

"What to Do? That's what my highly successful client worried In the face of the new pandemic sweeping the globe and causing all kinds of uncertainty, a client in a near panic asked me, "What to do?" To wit I answered, "What do you mean? "He continued: "I'm so worried. I've never seen anything like this before. Runs on supermarkets, a crashing economy, paranoia of being close to people, and a general sense of fear everywhere I go?" "Is that really accurate" I asked? Again, to wit this very high functioning wealthy business leader said, "That's how I see it "First of all, the sky is not falling! Did you hear that? The sky is not falling. Dr. Wayne Dyer was famous for reminding us that the way you look at something changes what you look at" This means, change your perspective and change your outcome. Garbage in – garbage out. Beauty in – Beauty out. Can it really get simpler than that?

10) Odell's Fall – Love, Jealousy and Deceit Lead to Murder in Legal Thriller with a Shakespearean Twist

Toronto, Ontario – From the best-selling author of "Breakdown", the story of the rise and sudden fall of prestigious tax law firm Heenan Blaikie comes a heart-pounding, never predictable murder-mystery that mirrors Shakespeare's tragedy, "Othello." Former HBO head Robert Cooper calls the debut novel a "page-turning, potboiler of a read." "Odell's Fall" asks what lengths would partners at a leading Manhattan law firm go to in the quest for success and love. Norman Bacal's fiction debut features the highly successful African-American attorney Odell Moore, along with his Iago-like colleague, Jackson Sherman, and a surrounding cast of scheming characters. Love, jealousy and deceit lead to murder in a penthouse apartment and Odell is the prime suspect. Did he commit the crime or was it a plot launched by Jackson Sherman? The answer is not clear until the last pages of this amazing novel. "I've always loved storytelling," says the author, who believes the secret of good storytelling lies in connecting with the reader. "The key to fiction is taking your characters and giving them a choice between two impossible options. In "Odell's Fall," Jackson has to choose between Odell and the senator and how he's going to manage the conflict between them." Odell's Fall was recently named an Amazon #1 Bestselling book in 9 categories and a top ten in four more categories

11) Fun with a Family Film - How to Beat a Bully

"How to Beat a Bully" is a "Home Alone" meets "Big Fat Liar" kind of comedy with an anti-bullying theme. It is on DVD and is also available on Amazon, Vudu, FandangoNow, Google Play and iTunes. "How to Beat a Bully" revolves around a 12-year-old boy who moves to a new town and gets picked on by school bullies. In order to protect himself he uses his brain instead of his fist, and comes up with an idea that not only stops the bullies, but gets them to be his new BFFs. Along the way, there are humorous adventures, in which he gets his dad in trouble with some bad guys, who want to do more than bully him. The film is recommended Family-Friendly by the Dove Foundation and was awarded "Best Feature Film" at the L-Dub Film Festival. The filmmakers are excited about the movie's positive message. "We know watching the film will be fun for all but more than that, it can be a shared experience that opens up a discussion on the subject of bullying. What better way to begin a conversation than with something that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike – and get them in a mood to feel good and embrace each other's individuality and differences." The Huffington Post and Examiner published articles about "How to Beat a Bully" and Splash Magazines Worldwide gave it a glowing review that lots of big studios would be thrilled to get for any of their new movies. Splash's review called "How to Beat a Bully" "a delightful 83-minute comedy… that can give kids and parents smiles and laughs …a classic farce that is fun, whimsical, and absolutely enjoyable.''
