HealthRock?s Dr. Mache Seibel addresses DHHS to discuss The Use of Music To Promote Health Literacy

Newton, MA, 11/18/08) ? Remember Schoolhouse Rock? Or the ABC song? Of course you do! And using those very tools to teach health literacy, Dr. Mache Seibel, founder of HealthRock® and a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School has been invited to address the Department of Health and Human Services to provide his approach of using music to promote health literacy.

Performing as DocRock, Seibel uses original songs to make health information more memorable, enjoyable, and actionable. Starting with his motto, ?It?s better to stay well than to get well?, Dr. Seibel discusses how music has been used historically to aid memory, how advertisers use music constantly to help us remember their products, and how some other countries around the world are using music to keep people well. ?Now?, Dr. Seibel says, ?HealthRock is using music to make learning about health both fun and memorable in the United States.?

Some 90 million adults have too little health information to make good health decision, states Seibel, and that results in up to 90 % of illnesses and diseases being preventable. In addition to the huge loss of health this creates, it also contributes up to one trillion dollars of lost healthcare dollars. ?If we could shave off just 1% of that cost, states Seibel, that would yield a savings of $10 Billion annually.

HealthRock has been the recipient of multiple awards including eHealthcare Leadership, iParenting Media Awards, and a Parents? Choice Approved Award. The website, www.healthrock.com is an interactive and fun destination where kids find songs and games about health, ask questions, and learn. HealthRock?s cartoons can also be seen on Rhode Island PBS.
