Thanksgiving at the Ad Council

Thanksgiving at the Ad Council
Once again at the Ad Council, we have so much to be thankful for. From our two Emmy nominations for Love Has No Labels, to our new office space being almost complete, to the wonderful new staff members we’ve gotten to know this year, 2017 has been an incredible year for us. In this spirit, I asked our employees what they will be giving thanks for around their tables this year and how they will be giving back with their time and/or charitable donations. Check out some of our favorite answers below!

What We’re Thankful For

  1. I am thankful for my three amazing kids, my super supportive husband and my fantastic work family.
  2. I’m thankful for phone calls with my grandparents. They are almost 90, but they have so much life. They teach me how to be strong, grateful, and generous every day.

  7. I’m thankful to be working in an organization that aims to help our communities throughout the nation.
  8. This probably isn’t a very unique answer, but I am truly so very thankful for family. Family relationships aren’t always easy, but it’s been my personal experience in the last year that underneath any drama or frustration or disagreement, there is a layer of unconditional love that is very precious. I’m thankful to have a loving, supportive family; hopefully I can be that kind of support for others who may not have the same experience as me.

  22. I’m thankful for good health and all of my family and friends. Also for the cold, because the summer and I are enemies.
  23. I’m thankful I get to marry my best friend in less than a year! Also, I’m thankful I have such a wonderful place to work where I feel valued and appreciated.
  24. I am thankful for my daughter who is generally happy and healthy and cracks me up on a regular basis.

  29. I’m thankful for the many gifts I receive daily.
  30. I am thankful for all of the love in the world.

Where We Will Be Donating This Holiday Season

  1. From global to local, here are my top three charities. 1) IRC or American Refugee Committee– how can you watch what’s happening in Syria and so many places across the globe and not want to give to refugees this year? 2) New York Times Fund–they pick individual local charities doing great work, 3) The 52nd St. Project– a Hell’s Kitchen program pairing disadvantaged kids with professional theater artists to learn performance and writing skills and have a safe place to go after school each day.
  2. I’ll be donating to the International Rescue Committee.
  3. I donate with my time at Martha’s Table, a D.C. non-profit that combats hunger and homelessness.
  4. I will be donating to City Harvest of New York – they help rescue food that would otherwise go to waste at restaurants and grocery stores and provide it to soup kitchens and food pantries to feed hungry New Yorkers. It’s basically like our Hunger Prevention and Save the Food campaigns coming together for a good cause!
  5. Any animal charity, because animals cannot speak for or help themselves and it’s up to us to help them in any way we can. I currently donate to more than 5 different animal charities.
  6. I love to contribute to any charity that is devoted to helping children…health issues, opportunities, growth and development…there are so many wonderful nonprofits making a real difference.
  7. This year I am donating to www.2400miles.org, an organization set up to support an ALL-FEMALE crew team that will be rowing 2,400 MILES from California to Hawaii to set a world record in the name of charity (they are doing to benefit Doctor’s Without Borders).
  8. This Thanksgiving, I’ll be donating to The Hoboken Shelter, a wonderful place that provides nutritious food, shelter, and services for Hudson County’s homeless population. They shelter 50 people nightly, serve 500 meals daily, and host 1,000 showers weekly.
  9. I will be donating to Planned Parenthood in order to provide vital support to health centers and patients across the country who rely on Planned Parenthood for critical health care.
  10. I would encourage others to donate their time, as opposed to/in addition to money. I’ve volunteered as a mentor for underprivileged children for a few years, and seeing the impact that something as simple as showing up to be with them every other week has had on these kids has been eye opening.
  11. I’d like to suggest donating to Giving for Living – a non-profit my uncles began after a trip to Nicaragua many years ago. After realizing the lack of basic necessities available across the country, they sought to make a change for the everyday child. The organization aims to improve the lives of children in these disadvantaged communities, by providing a variety of items – clothing, toys, educational books, etc. Last year, they launched a new effort to help compliment donations by selling organic coffee from the assisted region, specifically to help with educational materials.
  12. I will be donating to the ACLU and homeless shelters.
  13. I plan to donate to Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance. It’s a cause I give to whenever I can. Ovarian cancer is the deadliest reproductive cancer and we need much more research to get to an early detection test and better treatment.
  14. I will be donating to Direct Relief. They have the expertise to truly help in the wake of disasters like the hurricane in Puerto Rico. I also support local hunger charities, because they can play a key role in breaking the cycle of poverty.
  15. I recommend giving to Donate Life, the primary organ donation organization matching those in need of life saving organ transplants this holiday season.
  16. I recommend donating to One America Appeal to help those affected by the devastating hurricanes we experienced this year.
  17. I will be donating to WNYC. Please support your local news media!
  18. I donate to Hi-Caliber Horse Rescue. As an animal lover and “horse girl,” this is a fantastic organization saves a lot of abused and neglected horses, rehabilitates them and has an adoption center once they are healthy.
  19. I plan to support Color of Change and GLAAD. Both organizations are doing incredibly strategic and innovative work to support equality and to fight injustice.
  20. I donate to Feeding America because there is nothing worse than being hungry over the holidays.
  21. I will be donating to Planned Parenthood because they are providing vital services to women.
  22. I recommend giving to local organizations! Do your research and find small non-profits that are on the ground, doing constant work in their communities.
  23. I would recommend donating to your local food bank – there are so many individuals right in your own backyard who need assistance this holiday season.
  24. Donate to the World Wildlife Fund because we must speak for those who can’t (especially elephants!).
  25. I give to Tackle Kids Cancer, where 100% of donations benefit the essential clinical care, unique support services, and groundbreaking cancer research needed to find a cure for pediatric cancer.
  26. I like to donate locally. This year, I’ll be spending time at a local Salvation Army, serving holiday meals.
  27. I will be donating to Planned Parenthood and Everytown for Gun Safety. Both are at the front lines and are advocating for change.
  28. I like donating to Hour Children, a local Queens organization. I recommend donating locally, especially when your kids can be involved and learn about giving. I also give to St. Jude at this time of year as my own personal tradition.
From our Ad Council family to yours, we wish you a warm Thanksgiving full of food, family, and love.
