At Google’s Pixel 4 event yesterday, the company announced changes to it Nest Aware subscriptions, plans that provide support for Google Nest Cams and Nest Hello doorbells. Currently, users of the Nest Aware subscription service have to pay for each individual camera, reports Engadget. Starting next year, customers will pay one fee, regardless of how many cameras they have and can purchase the new Nest Aware support plans in the Google Store. The plans are automatically renewable. For new customers and for customers upgrading from a 1st gen Nest, there is a 30-day free trial available.

Pricing in the U.S. is as follows:

Google explained the changes on its Nest Aware FAQ page.

  • One low price for all Nest Aware products, including cameras, speakers and displays
  • Events based recording (EBR) that records activity detected on a Nest camera
  • Nest Aware Plus upgrade for 24/7 continuous recording (CVR)
  • Emergency calling using Nest speakers and displays or the Google Home app to call emergency services for your home (only available in the U.S.). This feature requires a working cellular or internet connection.
  • Sound detection using Nest speakers and Nest Hub to alert you when they detect the sound of a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm (only available in the U.S.). Google cautions users that their devices cannot actually detect smoke or carbon monoxide, just the sound of those alarms.

Also, at Pixel 4, Google announced that Stadia – its new, console-free, cloud-based gaming subscription service – will officially launch at noon (Eastern time), November 19 in the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Customers who did not pre-order the gaming service before now can buy the Founder’s edition for $129.99, which includes Chromecast Ultra, a limited-edition Night Blue controller (only available with the Founder’s edition) and two three-month Stadia Pro subscriptions.

After the three-month promo offer, the Stadia Pro Founder’s Edition is available for $9.99 a month. It includes resolution up to 4K, frame rate of 60 FPS, 5.1 surround sound, the ability to buy games whenever users want, access to free games released regularly, and exclusive discounts on select game purchases. If a user cancels their Stadia Pro subscription, they can still play the games they have purchased without a subscription.

Next year, a free Stadia Base service will also be available, but it does not have all the bells and whistles. Resolution is available up to 1080p, frame rate of 60 FPS, regular stereo sound and the availability to buy games. Base users will not get access to the free games released regularly or get special discounts reserved exclusively for Pro users.

Insider Take:

One of the great things about competition is that each company with a product or service to sell has to give customers its best offer, whether it is for a home security system or a gaming subscription service. Google is try to compete with the likes of Amazon, Sony and Microsoft. To do so, it needs to make its offerings simple, easy to use and affordable. Today’s consumers are savvy, and they shop around. Google wants to be sure it gets it share of the market.
