"Nothing gets done without trust," says future-of-work global thought leader Ira S. Wolfe. That's bad news for many businesses that are hoping for a swift economic recovery following the pandemic shutdown. "Pent-up demand may energize some consumers but what's really essential for a full recovery is trust." 

Wolfe sees a growing awareness in the need for trustworthiness during recent interviews and keynote presentations. "One of the most common questions that I'm now asked is 'how can we get our workers to trust our supervisors and management?' Prior to the pandemic, I can count on one hand how many times I was asked specifically about trust."

Wolfe, who is president of Success Performance Solutions, cites a recent survey by Edelman Trust Barometer that showed CEOs rank last (even lower than journalists and government leaders) in job performance during the pandemic. That prompted Wolfe to partner with his colleague Dr. Charles W. Coker on a new white paper "5 Keys to Building Trust," introducing a Trust Profile that Coker was developing over the last year. According to Wolfe, trust was identified as an essential company core value as well as economic driver of economic performance and productivity, well before the pandemic shutdown. Gallup recognized trust in its Strength Based Leadership model as a key leadership ingredient required to meet the needs of people. As a result, many organizations adopted a strategy to build a culture of trust. But like many other "soft skill" initiatives, ''there is nothing soft about truth," says Wolfe. "Building trust takes time and deliberate effort. You can't buy it and then distribute it. It must be earned. Trust is personal and each relationship is unique."
