If you had you asked someone on New Year's Day of 2020 what they envisioned the year ahead might look like, few would've imagined that the first few months would be spent canceling trips, events, and academic semesters. Families and college students hadn't planned to spend their spring break in quarantine. Most businesses didn't enter the year in fear of stomach-turning Dow Jones plummets and sobering market uncertainty. Regardless of projections, governments across the world are taking extensive measures to limit the spread of COVID-19.

History is no stranger to epidemics and pandemics. But it's times like this, when looming uncertainty becomes the global lingua franca, that Christians have the opportunity to showcase the best of humanity. Yuval Levin, writing for the New York Timesurges Americans, particularly those of us who have strong institutional allegiances, to take an honest assessment of ourselves and ask, "Given my role here, how should I behave?" This is the question that those who take their institutional roles seriously are now asking themselves. For Christians, the answer is given very clearly in Matthew 22: Love God and love your neighbors.

The Moment to End Surprise Billing: Coronavirus Has Exposed A Problem That's A Scourge On American Health Care

Imagine returning home from China at the height of the coronavirus outbreak, only to face a bone-chilling reality: You're beginning to fall ill. This terrifying experience is precisely the situation Miami native Osmel Martinez Azcue found himself in just last month. Following a work trip to the illness-riddled region, Azcue started developing flu-like symptoms — many of which are shared between the common flu and COVID-19, better known as the coronavirus.

Azcue had the presence of mind to do the right thing. He checked into Jackson Memorial Hospital and alerted the medical staff that he could potentially be infected with the coronavirus. There, he was quarantined, tested and forced to wait for the results. The blood test, thankfully, provided good news. Azcue didn't have the coronavirus; he would just have to battle the flu.

But unfortunately, he wasn't yet out of the woods.

Two weeks following his coronavirus scare, Azcue received more bad news in the form of a surprise medical bill totaling $3,270. His insurance agreed to cover a portion of the cost, but only if he could provide three years of health records to prove his flu didn't stem from a preexisting condition. Despite already paying a sizable $180 per month for health insurance, Azcue was still on the hook for $1,400 in unexpected medical expenses.

The worst part? Azcue's run-in with surprise medical billing isn't unique, and according to reports, soon his coronavirus scare won't be, either.

Put gloves on (donning) before you start work and take them off (doffing) when you stop work. Use fresh gloves each time you remove them (if disposables are used).

  1. Wash your hands frequently and apply sanitizer before and after going to the restroom, eating or taking off your gloves or mask. Wear goggles when mixing chemicals or if there is mist or dust in the air.
  2. Keep soiled hands away from your eyes, nose, mouth, face and body.
  3. Wear a face mask (particulate respirator N95%) at all times when working and when traveling in congested public spaces. (bus, plane, train, etc.)
  4. Do not go to work if you are sick (cough, cold, flu, temperature, shortness of breath, runny nose, open wounds). Those reporting to work when sick should be sent home and referred to their personal physician.
  5. Use disinfectant solution or wipes to regularly clean all high-touch surfaces such as light switches, elevator buttons, hand rails, drinking fountains, phones, door push plates and handles, counters, desks, keyboards, etc. Do the same at home, when you travel or use public facilities.
  6. Use vacuum cleaners, auto-scrubbers and carpet extractors that provide HEPA filtration.
  7. No handshakes or hugging (for now), Arm/Elbow bumping is in. Use phones & email to reduce personal contact and use your own phone, computer and stapler, etc. Disinfect frequently.
  8. Keep your distance from others 4-6 ft is best. (cough and sneeze zone)
  9. Don't be scared, be proactive by reducing risks & taking steps that help prevent cross infection. Be aware of your surroundings and take action to protect yourself, your family and the public.

The Call of a Generation - Navigating the Covid-19 Crisis

Arthur Koch -- Management Consultant      www.ArthurKochMGT.com

As our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents before us, each generation was called on to make sacrifices for their country: whether it was during World Wars, The Great Depression, or similar pandemics such as the Spanish Flu. Today, WE are the generation who must make the sacrifices. We will get through this as stronger people, stronger nations and partnerships. Please remember, as bad as this feels, no one is dropping bombs on us or shooting at us! This is a very complex, fluid situation, and white papers could be written on each area outlined. However, for the sake of time and necessity, I'll try to outline the critical key points to help you and your team navigate the current developments. Below, I have broken down the core competencies, skills and tasks into several categories:

(Atlanta) – Any talk of rescheduling the Tokyo 2020 Olympics must first deal with the reality that nearly half of the Games' projected 10,000+ athletes have yet to qualify.

"Some 57 percent of the Games' athletes have booked places on their nations' teams," says Around the Rings Editor and Founder Ed Hula.

"But that means 43 percent – nearly half – have not been qualified because of cancellations due to COVID-19."

"How to rebuild the competition calendar to accommodate these athletes is key to any discussions of postponing or rescheduling the XXXII Games."

In Wednesday's featured article, ATR content editor Gerard Farek writes about the difficulties facing athletes training for Tokyo 2020 because of the virus.

Around the Rings recognized early on the threat COVID-19 presented to world sport. For the past several weeks, ATR's worldwide team of correspondents have focused on the pandemic's challenge to sport.

*?What to Do? That's what my highly successful client worried.

"Dateline: Los Angeles:  In the face of the new pandemic sweeping the globe and causing all kinds of uncertainty, a client in a near panic asked me, "What to do?"To wit I answered, "What do you mean?"He continued: "I'm so worried. I've never seen anything like this before. Runs on supermarkets, a crashing economy, paranoia of being close to people, and a general sense of fear everywhere I go?""Is that really accurate" I asked?Again, to wit this very high functioning wealthy business leader said, "That's how I see it"First of all, the sky is not falling!Did you hear that? The sky is not falling.Dr. Wayne Dyer was famous for reminding us that the way you look at something changes what you look at" This means, change your perspective and change your outcome. Garbage in – garbage out. Beauty in – Beauty out. Can it really get simpler than that?

*Why Aren?t There More Ventilators for the Coronavirus?

olden CO - According to Pamela D. Wilson, caregiving expert, caregivers, and the public are asking, "why aren't there more ventilators?" It is Wilson's opinion that a different question should be asked.

The Question That Should Be Asked

The question that should be asked is, "do you want to be placed on life support?" "What are your wishes for extensive care?"

Surveys confirm that 25% of the U.S. population believes that they should go to the hospital if they have the coronavirus. The recommendation is to stay home unless extensive care as the result of breathing problems is needed.

A Ventilator is Life Support

Most people have no idea what a ventilator is, or what being on a ventilator means. A ventilator breathes for the body when the body cannot breathe on its own.

For the elderly, the statistics of being placed on a ventilator are sobering  Initial and long term survival rates are low. Persons on ventilators can acquire pneumonia, which is an added life-threatening situation. The elderly who are in poor health and who have the coronavirus are more likely to experience the health complication of pneumonia.
