While writing Road Map for Graduate Study in 2008 (CLICK HERE), my initial plan was that the fourth chapter would be focused on issues facing students from one country who are thinking of pursuing graduate study in another country. However, as the book developed, it seemed that much of the content would be appropriate for anyone thinking of a graduate degree, wherever s/he may live. As a result, my final decision was that the fourth chapter would address frequently asked questions of inquirers, applicants, admitted and enrolled students.
Since the release of Road Map, however, several trusted colleagues have suggested that there are still certain matters pertaining to graduate study abroad that it would be useful to address. The information contained in this series is the result of their invaluable input.
There is most certainly an added dimension of planning, diligence and anxiety associated with pursuing a graduate degree abroad. Added to all of the other major adjustments, international students must quickly acclimate to a new country/city and culture, and in many instances a new language. This is quite an undertaking. The good news is that thousands upon thousands have made this journey quite successfully, and so will you!
Some international students are already maintaining residence in the country where they would like to attend graduate school. Most are coming directly from their home countries. The information contained in this series will be of help in either situation.
Upcoming segments of this series include some words of advice for students, and also for parents. There will be information on how the admissions director/committee approaches the evaluation of applications from international students. There will also be some tips on finances and maximizing career opportunities, along with comments about securing a visa and navigating the transition to living in another country.
This series, as with Road Map, is based on 28 amazing years it was my privilege to spend in the fields of graduate enrollment and student services. As that employment/experience was exclusively in the United States, the information in this supplement will be focused on international students who choose to earn a graduate degree in the United States.
Stay tuned for Part 1: A Word for Students and for Parents
