Finally, the US is starting to make some headway in supporting midlife women.

Kudos to Reps. Cindy Axne, D-Iowa, and David McKinley, R-W.Va., who have introduced a bipartisan bill in Congress called The Menopause Research Bill, which will according to a West Virginia press release, “jumpstart research into finding new treatments for symptoms caused by menopause.”

This is huge. All women who live long enough go through menopause, and this may be one of the first times this taboo word has been said above a whisper in the halls of Congress.

This is an important step to increasing advocacy for midlife women into and through their menopause transition. Currently, 70 percent of midlife women are not receiving any treatment for their menopause symptoms. And this is compounded by the fact that there is a lot of misinformation about menopause and its treatments.

In order for our country to continue to thrive economically, we need midlife women to be able to function at their full capacity both in their personal lives and in the workplace. Midlife women are one fourth of the US workforce and many midlife women are struggling with menopause symptoms and dropping out of the workforce. Forty percent are thinking about leaving and the vast majority of US businesses have no menopause policy.

This is extremely important because midlife women are often at the peak of their careers, know the intricacies of the company, and serve as role models for the younger women who work there. But menopause is getting in the way.

Finally, menopause is getting some attention.
