The Herman Trend Alert

Experiences for Good

For years now non-profits have promoted, auctioned, raffled, and sold donated long weekends and even weeks at vacation hideaways. But more recently, I have seen an interesting trend. Charities are raffling experiences.

Enter Prizeo.com

For those who can afford it, Prizeo offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences and sweepstakes. Prizeo provides the platform for celebrities to mobilize their huge audiences of fans to raise awareness and funds for important causes around the globe---and make a profound difference in the lives of those the charities serve. Their services include highly scalable technology, automated payment processing, and sweepstakes administration.

Step 1: choose your dream prize

Prizeo works with charities and their celebrity partners to create unique sweepstakes for experiences that you can win. With your donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, you might win the chance to meet actor Larry David and win a walk-on role on Curb Your Enthusiasm or with your donation to the Rainforest Partnership, you might win a seven-night vacation at a stunning hilltop Umbrian villa for you and five guests or you could support the Children's Health Defense and win a trip to the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport, Massachusetts this summer and the opportunity to go sailing with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Whether you are into film, music, or sports, you will surely find something appealing on which to bid.

Step 2: get out your credit card

With just a small donation ($10 USD) to the celebrity's chosen cause, you may participate and earn 100 entries into your chosen sweepstakes; the more you give, the more chances you have to win. Of course, you can also always enter for free without donation or purchase, however that requires extra steps and mailing in the entry. For most of the prizes, the cost of entry is very reasonable anyway.

Step 3: earn additional entries for spreading the word

Wanting to reach as wide an audience as possible, the charities offer bonus entries for sharing on social media (Facebook or Twitter) or email---when friends enter as a result of this sharing. Folks earn this extra credit, when their friends use the "unique link" the original donor was given.

Random selection of winners

After the sweepstakes closes, the lucky winner is chosen at random. That person will enjoy an experience of a lifetime.

Not a fad, but a long-term trend

I believe strongly that this concept of raffling experiences is here to stay. It is an innovative way for celebrities to support their favorite causes and simultaneously engage much wider audiences. It also means the charities are able to add many more names to their roles for additional solicitation. The program appears to be a win-win for everyone involved. This development is right on trend for my new book, Experience Rules: How Positive Experiences Will Drive Profit into the Future, (Indie Books, 2019) due out in July.
