It's national "asthma and allergy awareness" month.  It's clear that swimming can help in stabilized asthma patients.  It's not clear that children, teachers and families are as informed about the tiny particles that impact the health of human lungs.  These can come from natural or unnatural fumes, vapors, particles, and spouts. Kids at Kids First So Cal will join children from 120 countries studying air quality this week (www.kidsfirst.la) and send their data by phone or ipad up to GLOBE satellites.

Today new natural eruptions are ongoing and the lava from Fissure 20 is hitting the surf on Hilo in Puna.  While much of Hawaii is not impacted, still Puna needs its economy to continue despite the fact that the volcano is now generating LAZE.

This is a chemical reaction that releases on impact with the sea water a noxious gas mixed with glass like ash particles. For young children, the elderly, the chronic copd or asthma sufferer this is not good.  Humans with damaged lungs or asthma are vulnerable to breathing difficulties already and the addition of hydrochloric acid and lava ash may force health officials to act by evacuating those in danger of dirty air, hot lava, or flying embers.  Safety, chemistry, and earth sciences are interlinked in today's news and in tracking the volcanoe's eruption and magma flow progress on a phone or ipad, this becomes a teachable moment for hands on scientists and GLOBE educator volunteers

Fascinating to watch; it's even more necessary to send to donations to sites like Kalani or to look on social media to see how to help.  Children are fascinated by volcanoes and it's a perfect time to send in aerosol measurements to GLOBE. By joining the virtual aerosol campaign, school is way more cool and scientific than just reading a book.  What better way than to take daily measurements, make predictions, look for impact, then to embrace science in our daily lives using our phones or notebooks.  Your child can learn to keep a science journal of the colors in sunsets and simultaneously gain skills while preparing for for nontraditional careers?
