EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Most people have never heard of EMDR therapy. It is used to help individuals who are battling with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. It has been used by many organizations very effectively not only in the United States, but around the world. In the United States, for example, renowned organizations like the American Psychiatric Association as well as the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies all agree on how powerful of a therapy tool this can be. Other institutions that vouch for the validity and effectiveness of this therapy include the Department of Defense as well as the Department of Veteran Affairs.

There are a lot of circumstances that can lead to an individual developing post-traumatic stress disorder. Some experience trauma related to things like sexual assault, sexual abuse or physical assault. Post-traumatic stress disorder is often linked to combat experiences. Some individuals battle with this after they receive severe injuries in combat. Others battle with this because of acts of violence that they were obligated to perform or witness while carrying out their duty. Other individuals such as those who have survived an accident or those who are dealing with the sudden loss of someone they love may battle with post-traumatic stress disorder.

There are a lot of symptoms connected to PTSD. It is not uncommon for individuals with PTSD to fight insomnia. They may have flashbacks or nightmares. This, in turn, may lead to angry outbursts, or it may be hard for them to focus or concentrate. PTSD has also been linked to physical symptoms. If a person cannot sleep and if they are constantly on edge, they’re going to be physically fatigued. The stress can lead to gastrointestinal problems. Physical pain may be one of the ways that the disorder exhibits itself. Anyone battling with any of the symptoms associated with PTSD may benefit from EMDR therapy at our office.

Before a person is diagnosed with PTSD, they must have experienced trauma in their life. What’s interesting is that researchers now understand that it’s not just major life trauma that can cause a person to develop PTSD. Some people have experienced what most would consider relatively less dramatic traumas, yet these can cause even more drastic symptoms of PTSD. Some of these experiences are hateful experiences at school, with parents or with peers.

EMDR therapy is designed to help individuals address problems that are unprocessed. It is designed to help people address memories from their past right now. The goal is to leave a person feeling satisfied in their personal and professional life. It is designed to leave them in a place where they can develop a good support system without being troubled by disturbing thoughts or emotions.
