Attract The Right Job Or Clientele: Update Your Communication Strategy

The talk about an inclusive environment gives everyone pause to consider whether you need to update your communication strategy.  One traditional sentiment states, ‘Don’t talk, do!’

For a while, it will be harder than ever for many to find jobs and others to remain employed. Remote work plus a wild ride with the ups and downs of the stock market will have individuals and companies in flux. Adding to the dilemma is the need for many to change their thought and how they communicate it.

Topics for discussion include upcoming technological changes, diversity, and inclusion.  The immediate question to answer is, how are we to remain profitable in the current environment?  Similar to updating everyday habits, take the necessary time to recognize where you may need to update your communication strategy.

My Story

We are to communicate with the intent to listen and learn, and then speak. Blurting out what is on our mind never ends well.  In a brief moment of anger, business and jobs are lost, and friendships will end.

After a disturbing event is over, I use my quiet time to examine the details of why anger came to the forefront.  I attempt to figure out if I can avoid something in the future and how I can improve as I move forward.  Mark Cuban shared the following timely quote on Twitter:

“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” -Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

When someone suddenly makes a judgment call on me and my experience, I ask a question instead of getting into an argument.  One question that works well for me is, ‘what has been your experience to come to that conclusion?’

An inquisitive approach usually sets the other person’s tone back a notch.  Most often, people will see that I am attempting to understand them and their work.  Accordingly, a more in-depth conversation evolves.  However, if the pronouncements and commentary do not improve, I know to walk away instead of wasting further time.   My goal is always to develop a cordial relationship and encourage a returning and referring clientele.

Change can only occur when we are willing to consider the pros and cons of our communication strategy.

Remote work during these stressful times requires thoughtful communication more than ever.  We should all review whether we need to update our communication strategy.

A student recently asked me how I learned to stand up for myself and speak up when necessary.  In my case, it was my childhood that had me speaking up at an early age. I always pointed out the lack of fairness between the treatment of boys and girls.  By the time I became a teenager, adults would say that it is a man’s world, and there is nothing we can do about it.  My response was, but if we all purposefully stand together and speak up, with thought, then we can drive home the point and make a difference.

It is evident to me that we each need to review our communication strategy.  The next task is to fix the divides of which we are aware. Accordingly, I’m including the following Harvard Business Review article that asks, Do You Know why Your Company Needs A Chief Diversity Officer?

In the new era of at least discussing fair play for all, the step is, to be honest with yourself.  Honestly answer whether you vary your communication depending on whether you speak to a male or female or someone of another ethnicity.

Consider if you:

  • Speak down to some
  • Apply an unwanted term of endearment
  • Brag about your accomplishment without asking others about theirs
  • Accept and consider all opinions from all angles or just those of a select few
  • Offer all team members the opportunity to submit their ideas for improvement

Upon meeting online with individuals, now is the time to have more of a personal conversation. Before getting into the business portion of the meeting, inquire about how they are relaxing when not working. Ask about hobbies and family. Everyone appreciates the special attention.

Upon attending Zoom meetings with multiple people, lead the way to ensure everyone hears the ideas of others.  Be the one who encourages discussion around each so that everyone feels important. Even better, before the business portion begins, strive to get everyone in a good mood.

Ask these types of questions upfront:

  • Which activities do you look forward to that gets your mind off of the news?
  • Has anyone read a book or article of interest you would like to share?
  • Does anyone have a new idea for moving the business forward?

The questions will serve to put people in a better mood and potentially contribute more to the conversation. Instead of the traditional boring meetings, you will inject more life as you update your communication strategy.

When you give people the time to talk about themselves, they become more comfortable with you. Accordingly, the relationship begins to build, and attention then returns your way.  Conversations become more comfortable and fluid.

The result is as you update your conversation strategy, ideas for business possibilities evolve.  The relaxing and energizing conversation emerges into a professional bond, and business development naturally flourishes.
