"Women in Leadership: Rising Above the Ordinary" was the theme for the Diversity Council's 2013 Women in Leadership Symposium. Sponsored by and held at the Fannie Mae Foundation Education Center in Washington, DC, the event attracted women leaders across a wide variety of industries.

Dr. Carole Stovall is President and CEO of SLS Global and owner of the innovative on-line testing and assessment center, SLSGlobalAssess.com. Dr. Stovall spoke on a controversial issue, also referred to by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, in her new book, "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead". Dr. Stovall's topic, "Beyond the Box - Letting Go of Preconceived Barriers and Fears" deals with the myths that women must recognize and address in order to be successful leaders.

According to Dr. Stovall, "there are outside issues that negatively impact a woman's ability to be successful. But, there are also many things that we can do and change in order to have more control over our career and advancement. Understanding the myths about women and our work - for example, the myth of the glass ceiling - will give us the ability to make better and more complete choices".
