Dinosaurs, Mammals, and Air Conditioning

At the beginning of the summer season, I like to have preventive work done on our air conditioning units. We have two huge compressors for central air, and six independent units for given rooms. I called two companies in early June.

One was a state-wide, large operation that advertises constantly on radio. They told me they could get here no sooner than mid-July, and that they had a formula for such maintenance which would come to $900 for my systems, more is serious repairs were required.

The second was a lone-wolf who has a truck and is an expert in the business. He told me that he could get here in two weeks and he charged based on the amount of work required (e.g., adding freon, replacing filters).

I chose the lone wolf, he showed up as promised, and the bill was $180.

Never, ever think you’re at a disadvantage dealing with a larger competitor. Most are worse than dinosaurs. Be quick, nimble, and practical. In other words, be a mammal and you’ll outlive all of them.
