This Bizarro Death Cartoon brilliantly illustrates the need to include pets in our end-of-life planning documents, such wills and trusts.

We always seem to say to tropical birds, “Polly want a cracker?” Well, this savvy parrot says, “What I WANT is assurance that I’m provided for in your will, since I’ll outlive you by a couple decades. That, and the cracker.”

It’s true. Parrots, conures, and other feathered friends can live for many, many years. And if you acquire one of these birds in your middle ages, they very well could outlive you by decades. How will that bird be cared for when you have flown the nest for the next world?

Talk to your estate planning attorney about a pet trust. It helps dictate what will happen to your animal companion when you’re gone: who will care for the bird, how that care will be funded, and backup choices if your first choice doesn’t want to take on the responsibilities of parrot pet ownership.

Don’t forget your pets when doing estate planning!
