The Funky Winkerbean cartoon recently did a collection of strips that followed Funky and his wife Holly to an estate planning attorney’s office to prepare a trust. He’s wise-cracking jokes all the way through the process, because mortality issues make most people nervous.

After a medical scare, he and the wife start talking about doing estate planning.

This sideways one, very unusual in the comics, looks at succession planning for his business.

The attorney starts to explain how an irrevocable trust works, with the assumption the man dies first (based on actuarial figures, this often is the case).

Funky still cracks the one-liners after the attorney explains how a trust works.

The attorney explains that a trust allows assets to flow to the spouse without having to go through probate court. Funky asks, “Were there a lot of people at my funeral?”

And then we have a little fun with the term “executrix.” That’s the female form of “executor,” the person charged with carrying out the details of the will or trust.

Did you know that less than 30% of adults in the U.S. have completed will or trust documents? Bravo to cartoonist Tom Batiuk for tackling these important social and educational issues! Don’t put off this important aspect of end-of-life planning.
