What does comedy and continuing education have in common? Well, they both deal with a lot of change. Keynote Speaker & Comedian Jan McInnis is sharing her keynote "Finding the Funny in Change" at the Texas Administrators of Continuing Education virtual conference tomorrow, April 15, 2021.

In this popular keynote, McInnis shares some techniques that she has used in her comedy career to handle change that attendees can put to use in their business and personal lives. Change causes fear, tension, and miscommunications. In her keynote, Jan gives practical and immediately useful tips on, among other things, how to diffuse tension instantly, kick off tough conversations, and enhance communications through using appropriate humor. She also includes tips on humor and health along with a few "rules" for using humor.

"A lot of what comedians do to create humor on stage, can be used in the office. Think about it, if you sit down to a staff meeting and have just had some big change, and you're not going to talk about it, then you may have people thinking that you don't "get it" and don't care. But if you can use some well-placed humor to quickly address it, you can acknowledge the situation and move forward," McInnis mentions.

McInnis uses examples from her thousands of comedy events to illustrate what she did in a particular situation. "Things happen ahead of you on stage, that make it tough for a comedian to go right into their act. I show people some techniques to deal with these unknowns and keep things rolling," McInnis says.

And no, this keynote is not about writing jokes and being a comedian McInnis cautions. It's about responding to a change situation, and changing the stressful energy so you can move through it. There is also plenty of clean, appropriate humor throughout the keynote from her comedy act.
