Last Friday, my friend, author advocate, publishing truth-teller and award-winning book designer Joel Friedlander died from bladder cancer. A colleague of many years, I wrote for Joel’s website, TheBookDesigner, until he sold it several months ago; had him many times as a guest on the AuthorU-Your Guide to Book Publishing podcast; included him as a speaker at Author Extravaganza and Publishing at Sea events; and someone that I could and would bounce ideas off of.

Independent authors don’t just toss their works online anymore. They are increasingly learning to act as publishers when they decide how to design and print their books. And like publishers, they need to make sure their products are the best they can be.

Joel’s The Book Blueprint examines each part of the book, explaining its logic and structure, which in turn influences each part of the book’s design. He brought together all the writing on this subject.

I will miss working with Joel. Having his voice and sage advice a click away through several of my podcasts was sad… and fun… as I listened to several of them on Sunday. I hope you will, too.
