December 6, 2018 marks the ninth annual Celebrate Shelter Pets Day. To celebrate, The Shelter Pet Project asked shelter pet parents at the Ad Council what it’s like to bring home a loving, cuddly companion from a shelter. Without further ado, let the heartwarming photos and adorable and humorous answers to questions like, “What’s your favorite memory with your shelter pet?” and “What three words describe your shelter pet?” commence.

Meredith West (Ad Council) and Bennett

Bennett 1
Q: Why did you choose to adopt a shelter pet?
A: There are so many animals out there that are ready to love you and deserve a good home. My husband and I can’t imagine our life without Bennett. Knowing that we were able to offer him a loving and safe home is the best feeling. Best decision we ever made, hands down!

Liz Johnson DeAngelis (Ad Council) and Luna AKA Tuna AKA Toons

Q: What’s your favorite memory with your shelter pet?
A: Every day. But if I had to pick one, the first time we took her to the beach. That’s when we learned she LOVES running around on sand and doesn’t enjoy water. Going to the beach is still one of her favorite things to do.
Q: What would you tell someone who’s on the fence about adopting a shelter pet?
A: Having a pet is an amazing experience in itself but being able to do so while also saving an animal’s life makes the bond that much stronger.
Q: Why did you choose to adopt a shelter pet?
A: It was never a question-everyone we know adopted their pets and we knew as soon as we were ready for a dog we would adopt.
Q: What 3 words describe your shelter pet?
A: Licky, cuddly, loving. I love having a dog who covers me in licks as soon as I get home, and once she is comfortable around someone she is the CUDDLIEST dog I have ever met. She is known for sleeping under blankets and prefers to lay in someone’s lap.
Q: What does your shelter pet mean to you?
A: Unconditional love. She is our first-born child, and with a human child on the way I know she will be the best big sister!

Patty Goldman (Ad Council) and Okie

Q: Why did you choose to adopt a shelter pet?
A: There are so many wonderful dogs out there who need a home!  And once you have a shelter pet it makes your house a home in such a deep and comforting way. (But also it’s because…look at that face!!)
Q: What 3 words describe your shelter pet?
A: LAZY, furry, sweetheart.

Margaret Files (Ad Council) and Oscar

Q: What’s your favorite memory with your shelter pet?
A: The first time we ever brought him home, he immediately ran over to our coffee table and started scrabbling around beneath it with his little paws. It turns out a tennis ball had rolled under it weeks earlier – and I guess his nose lead him right to it!
Q: What 3 words describe your shelter pet?
A: Playful, clever, loving, snoozy (I had to do four…).

Hannah Strashun (Ad Council) and Quinn

Quinn_3
Q: What’s your favorite memory with your shelter pet?
A: It’s not a memory per se, but one of the things I love about Quinn is how loving she is. When we come home each day from work, the greeting she gives us is incredible. She hops on her back legs around our feet until she is able to give us a kiss and we give her a belly rub. And when we’re sitting on the couch, she comes up and cuddles between us or in the crook behind our knees and she maneuvers herself and burrows under the blanket. She loves to snuggle!
Q: What would you tell someone who’s on the fence about adopting a shelter pet?
A: There are so many incredible, special pets out there who are looking for a loving forever home! We adopted Quinn when she was 10 weeks old (three years ago) and she has forever changed our lives – for the better. The love and joy that comes with adopting a shelter pet totally outweighs the unknowns.
Q: What 3 words describe your shelter pet?
A: Smart(!!), loving, energetic.
Q: What does your shelter pet mean to you?
A: She was our first baby. She is a full-fledged member of the family and I honestly couldn’t image our life without her!

Rachelle Reeder (Ad Council) and Eleanor Roosevelt

rachelle and eleanor roosevelt
Q: What’s your favorite memory with your shelter pet?
A: We weren’t supposed to adopt Eleanor Roosevelt, because the shelter had originally told us she was already adopted. However, on July 4th we got a call from the shelter saying, “If you want her, she’s yours, but you have to come right now.” We dropped everything we were doing and drove two hours to get her, asking ourselves, “Is this too spontaneous? Are we sure?” But when we saw her for the first time, I immediately felt more sure about adopting her than I’ve ever felt about anything. She was even cuter than her pictures, and also sweet and gentle and licked our hands when we pet her. It was instant love.
Q: What would you tell someone who’s on the fence about adopting a shelter pet?
A: You can tell how grateful shelter pets are to be adopted – it’s the most rewarding experience!

Shirley Yeung (Ad Council) and Willoughby

shirley 2
Q: What’s your favorite memory with your shelter pet?
A: One of my favorite memories with Willoughby is the first time I took him to the beach. Willoughby is a rescue from Puerto Rico, where “Dead Dog Beach” is a real place and a notorious dumping ground for stray and unwanted dogs. So to see him run freely and happily on the beach was truly special!

Olivia Vera (Ad Council) and Sven

Q: What would you tell someone who’s on the fence about adopting a shelter pet?
A: When adopting a shelter pet, you are saving two lives – the pet you adopt and another pet that gets a spot in the shelter and the opportunity to find a new home and start a new life. Shelter pets also have the magical ability to teach you about unconditional love, patience, forgiveness, and resilience. You may think you are saving them, but they will save you!
