Pelvic and Lower Back PainMany people experience some form of pelvic and lower back pain in a lifetime. More often than not, it is women who suffer from both back and pelvic pain as there are symptoms of one pain that may ultimately affect the other. The most common causes of back and pelvic pain usually are a result of muscle strains and tension caused to these parts of the body due to lack of flexibility and proper alignment. When we are active (especially in instances when we are pulling, pushing, lifting or throwing) if there is no proper support for these areas of our bodies we may notice feelings of soreness, discomfort and pain which is your body’s way of letting us know that it has been overexerted.

If there is a strained or sprained muscle in the back, this can cause sympathetic pain through the pelvis. This also works the other way around. For instance, if one is suffering from a pinched nerve in the back, this can cause pain through the pelvis that can even resonate down through the legs and feet.

Many women experience both pelvic and lower back pain during the menstrual cycle. When the muscles in the pelvis contract and remain tense as a result of painful cramps known as dysmenorrhea the lower back generally suffers from this pain as well.

Cases of pelvic pain can be caused by many medical conditions. Pelvic pain can range from mild to severe and may manifest in dull or sharp sensations. A few known causes of pelvic and back pain include but are not limited to:

To determine the exact cause of your pelvic pain you may need the expertise of a physician if none of these causes seem obvious for your condition. Though there are indeed occasions when pelvic and lower back pains are to be taken seriously in most instances these pains can be treated at home. Here are a few suggestions for home remedies:

    • Try over counter pain relief. Medications such as Motrin and Advil are anti-inflammatory ibuprofens that can be used to treat both pelvic and back pain. These medications reduce inflammation in the body that may aid in causing pain.
    • Take it easy. Do what you can to cause the least amount of stress on the pelvis and back as possible. Avoid heavy lifting and other strenuous activity. Rest if you’d like, though bed rest is not required. You may continue your daily routine but if there are any instances when you feel the slightest discomfort stop what you are doing and allow the body to relax and recover.
    • Massages can help ease the tension in your lower back which can in turn ease the stress in your abdomen.
    • Practice good posture. Great posture can eliminate strain on the back and abdomen as these parts of the body are balance centers. Help your pelvis and back help you.
