One of the easiest things to do is catch a cheater on New Year's Day, according to infidelity expert Ruth Houston, who reveals a simple, yet often overlooked tip to help get the goods on a cheating mate.  Knowing what to look for is the key.

"Most cheaters can't resist the urge to touch base with their secret lover as the New year rolls in, to wish them a 'Happy New Year,' says Houston who is frequently called on by the media to comment infidelity issues in the news.  "This the telltale sign of infidelity that usually gives the cheater away."  

Houston has been researching and writing about infidelity for over 20 years and offers the following advice is based on the thousands of interviews she has conducted with both male and female infidelity victims and cheating mates:

"Any person who suspects infidelity should check the incoming or outgoing calls, text messages, or voice mail messages made or received by their partner shortly before or after midnight on New Year's Eve or early on New Year's Day."

Says Houston:

"In the case of a cheating woman, it's usually the first call or text message she receives.  If it's a cheating man, it's usually the first call he makes – though it's not uncommon for the roles to be reversed.  If the first person the cheater has contact with during this critical time period is not a family member, it's probably the person he or she is cheating with – especially if it's a member of the opposite sex."

If the phone number is unfamiliar, Houston suggests using a reverse phone search service like www.CheatingSpousePhoneSearch.com to find out who the number belongs to. 

Houston also advises exercising caution in the event this sign of infidelity turns up, saying:. 

"It's unwise to confront a cheater solely on the basis of one or two telltale signs.  If the suspicious spouse or significant other hasn't done so already, he or she should get additional proof.  A good infidelity reference book can help."
