Carlton Davis at the Art Dock

The Art Dockuments are published online. The first half (20 Art Dockuments) of a total of 36 are now available online. The website is http/:www.artdock.net. The Art Dockuments tell the stories of the Art Dock, the world's first drive-by gallery in a Los Angeles loading dock in the 1980s. The story is told in a preamble, 4 acts, and an epilog. The preamble tells how the idea of the Art Dock came about as The Cosmic Humeroid's Joke. Act I, the manifesto, tells the story of the Art Dock's early days when loft living and art galleries were illegal in the industrial area of downtown Los Angeles. It includes a manifesto about art's commoditization, standardization, and concept of art in a loading dock as a metaphor for the utility of all art. Act II is about the downtown artists who used the gallery as a community resource. In Act II there are references to two significant deaths, one the murder of Peter Ivars, the host of a cable television show, in his downtown loft.

These first 20 Art Dockuments are often hilarious as artists try to elude the city's inspectors. These Art Dockuments are also a serious investigation into art and the life of an artist, the reality, the misery, and the joy.

The last 16 Art Documents are in the process of completion. Act III will investigate the art scene in LA in preparation for and in conjunction with the 1984 Olympics. Act IV will investigate the business of art, when the curator, Carlton Davis, decided a drive-by gallery might be a viable commercial venture. The results were humorous, including an opening where the art to be displayed never showed up. The epilog will discuss the Art Dock today still existing in a half demolished Citizens Warehouse waiting to be put in action again. A future news release will be made when the Art Dockuments project is completed.

The Art Documents were inspired by Marcel Duchamp, who said "the most interesting thing about artists is how they live. "  Please read and enjoy the Art Dockuments.
