Denver, CO – Employee resource groups for family caregivers of elderly parents now have access to an open course from caregiving expert Pamela D Wilson. The program, Support Caring for Elderly Parents, features eight modules.

Family caregiving is an unexpected path fraught with unanticipated challenges. Unfortunately, employees helping aging parents or loved ones often do not associate themselves with the word "caregiver," so they don't realize that help and support are available.

Providing educational support within ERGs helps corporations support and retain valuable employees. In addition, by making caregiving of the elderly an acceptable workplace conversation—much like conversations about raising children—employees feel less isolated and alone.

Time spent in caregiving averages twenty hours a week on top of a full-time job. Time spent in care activities usually means that caregivers neglect other parts of their lives, including their health which can result in absenteeism.

Telltale signs that employees may be caregivers of elderly parents include changes in work schedules—for example, coming in late, leaving early, or requesting time off to take elderly parents to a doctor's appointment. Employees hesitate to advise supervisors of family caregiving responsibilities for fear of being viewed as less capable of doing their jobs.

When parents or spouses have significant health issues like dementia, Alzheimer's, or Parkinson's disease, caregivers will eventually need more time to coordinate or provide care. Employee caregiver resource groups can support caregivers at various stages of the caregiving journey.
