“You only sing when your winning!” Is a popular chant sung by British football fans at most matches. As a taunt to the fans of the opposing team when they are loosing and fall silent no longer cheering on their team. 

That certainly wasn’t the case last weekend when I watched the Los Angeles soccer derby between LAFC and LA Galaxy. As a LAFC season ticket holder I was part of the 3252, named after the capacity of the North End terrace where supporters sing, chant, dance, and cheer their team whether winning or loosing. 

It’s a good job LAFC fans don’t only sing when we are winning because we were 3-1 down after 16 minutes. The singing, chanting, drum beating, cheering continued. 

Considering this team is in their second season, the supporters are incredible. The atmosphere rivals the passion and excitement of English and European stadiums. It reminded me of watching AC Milan vs. Inter Milan in the San Siro Stadium many years ago. The crowd can make the game. 

Now consider your team at work, how much encouragement do they receive? — and I don’t mean empty “great job” accolades, I mean genuine acts of encouragement and support?

Do you give it?

Does your boss give it?

Does your team need more encouragement where they might not be winning right now?

As for LAFC last weekend, we went on to bring the game to a 3-3 draw, and missed far to many chances to actually beat them. 

But no one could accuse us of only singing when we were winning!
