Most Verizon customers in Georgetown went without service last week after a worker accidentally cut a cable that runs along the 31st Street Bridge now under reconstruction.
Verizon spokesman David Weissmann told the press that a contractor “inadvertently cut a bank of conduits containing Verizon cables” Dec. 2. The bridge crosses the C&O Canal and is is being rebuilt by the District Department of Transportation.
While service for many residential and business customers was restored, a few remain without their Verizon connections.
“My landline and my internet were out — and are still out,” David Abrams, who lives on 26th Street, told The Georgetowner. “To be honest, I was not horribly affected by the Verizon mess. But I thank God I didn’t have Verizon for my television. I’ve been using my cell phone this past week. I do think Verizon could have been more proactive in getting onto neighborhood list serves to update the community on a regular basis.”
Gateway, the apartment building at 2500 Q St. NW, has been without Verizon phone and internet service since last Monday, one member of the Georgetown Senior Center told The Georgetowner. The building managers continue to tell them they don’t know when it will be fixed, said the Q Street resident, who added that several members of the group were not able to be contacted for its annual Christmas lunch today.
Meanwhile, a electricity outage has affected about 150 homes on the east side of Georgetown. The outage began around 5:15 a.m., Dec. 9. Pepco is working to restore power. At least for Abrams, who lives near the effected subterranean transformer located at 27th & O Streets NW, that disruption never bothered him. “I was not affected by the electrical outage this morning,” he said.
