Children’s Room Flooring Inspiration

When it was time to start considering new flooring for my children’s rooms, for a very short time we tossed around the idea of putting a hard surface option in their rooms, and then when I put some thought into how my children live in their rooms it was evident that carpet was the best choice. My children sit on the floor a lot, both of them for different reasons even though they have chairs and desks in their rooms. With both of them doing remote school during this season, I often find my son laid out on the floor doing schoolwork, practicing his instrument, lifting weights, and talking to his friends on the phone. As a budding ballerina, my daughter spends a lot of time on the floor doing her ballet stretches, in addition to her hair and practicing her makeup application skills in front of her mirror.

When choosing the color, I decided to go with a longer pile than we had before, as well as a darker color to add more contrast. I like to think I offered them a more comfortable option for when they are sitting on the floor and a color that worked well with the styling throughout our home for a cohesive look.

In addition to the style and comfort, I wanted the house to feel cozy and warm during the winter months, not to mention the noise reduction it offers when my son goes to strumming on his viola and my daughter decides that her workouts need to include jumping jacks and a few other dance jumps that she works on. The most important benefit to carpet is it increases indoor air quality by filtering and trapping dust, pollen, and other particles in the air, removing them from the breathing zone.

I just recently replaced the carpet in my office as well, and I am in love. Carpet serves so many purposes, and style is just one of them. Our master bedroom is long overdue for new flooring and will get new carpet at the top of the year, once we repaint and scrape the ceiling. Stay tuned to see what we do with our master bedroom!

I have a toddler and a baby who spend most of their time playing and crawling on the floor. The kids play all throughout the house with their toys and books strewn everywhere. Our two year old is very active and our baby will be walking soon, so I wanted to create a dedicated play space just for them. The playroom needed to be safe, cozy, healthy, and inviting to two little ones.

We have a historic home with hardwood floors throughout the house, so the first step to designing this room was choosing a carpet that made sense for us, we settled on a stylish, textured tile carpet. We complemented the carpet with a brown leather daybed, a tent, and creative storage.

We wanted the space to be gender neutral for both Jackson and Savannah, but also to flow with the rest of our home with the Black Art collection and plaid (a favorite of mine). I hope our playroom helps to inspire your playroom or children’s rooms and how best to incorporate carpet into your home. There is a carpet style, color, and pattern for any and every room.

Carpet Tiles

Tiled carpet gives our playroom a soft cushion underfoot and helps to reduce noise from our little ones feet or toys.

Breathe Easy

Carpets support healthy living, by improving indoor air quality.

Carpet is a great choice for any room in your house, but I wanted to specifically share why we chose it for our girls’ bedrooms. Our girls are still little. They are 4 and 6, and are constantly playing with their dolls. They primarily play in their playroom and in their bedrooms. When choosing finishes for their rooms, we knew we wanted to add carpet since they are on the floor so much.

I know they’ll continue to start playing in their rooms more and more. Carpet is just so much more comfortable to play on vs. hardwood flooring. Like I said above, we didn’t do any carpet pad upgrades in our last home. Since we added a thicker carpet pad, it has made our carpet so much more cushy! Everyone that steps on our carpet comments on how comfortable it feels!

We are extremely happy with our carpet choice. Ryan and I chose a loop style carpet by. It is made out of 100% continuous filament nylon. They have a ton of really pretty colors to choose from.

The Carpet and Rug Institute offers a lot of great information on the benefits of carpet on their website. Make sure to check them out to learn more! They’re the thought leader in carpet, trends, and best practices!  The main reasons why we chose carpet are the beauty and style that it adds to our rooms. It is also super comfortable to sit on. I don’t mind getting on the floor to play with the girls in their rooms!

Improved Air Quality

If you happen to suffer from allergies, adding carpet can be a great way to help reduce your symptoms. According to CRI, new carpet is the lowest VOC-emitting choice available when it comes to choosing flooring. It helps trap dust, pollen, and other particles in the carpet so that you aren’t breathing them in through the air.

Comfort/Warmth and Noise Reduction

Carpet is the best choice in flooring if you want a comfortable and warm space to relax in. It helps reduce falls/trips and our dog Dexter really loves being on a carpeted floor. He runs all over the place, and being on carpet helps him from slipping.

Having carpet in the girls’ rooms also reduces noise. It also helps reduce noise from room to room. Carpet would be a great choice if you’re designing an office because of this benefit. We added carpet to my office for this reason!

Environmental Sustainability

Carpet is a great choice when it comes to finding a sustainable option for flooring. The carpet industry is minimizing the impact on the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling. Through the work of Carpet America Recovery Effort, they have helped to divert over 4 billion pounds of carpet from landfills since 2002. Isn’t that so great?!

Simple Tips for Turning a Room into a Classroom

This blog post is part of the Beauty of Carpet campaign from Thistlewood Farms.

We just found out that our local schools are starting out online.

Right now, for the first three weeks, online learning is the current education situation.

My online learners are teenagers in high school, but my sister-in-law has three littles and one kind of not-so-little-any-more student that live at her house.

We’ve all been living footloose and fancy-free with our summer vacation, but school starts in a week here in Texas.

Just between us?

I’m an amazing aunt and Westleigh is an amazing cousin and we wanted to start their online school year off right, so we went shopping and surprised them with new school supplies.

And helped them get the room ready for online school and whatever the rest of 2020 holds.

If you need help creating a space for online learning?

Here are some simple tips for turning a room into a classroom.

WELCOMING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

We made sure that the room is light and bright and airy with warm and cozy carpeting on the floor. The carpet provides a soft cushion for little feet and helps reduce noise in the learning environment.

Carpet also helps improve air quality in the space and it’s so easy to keep clean for students with asthma and allergies.

Students can also spread out on the floor because there’s a cozy surface to read or work on, too.

Modern Farmhouse Nursery with Carpet

This blog post is part of the Beauty of Carpet campaign from Sleep in the City.

Carpet vs. Wood Flooring: We ended up choosing wall-to-wall carpet for this farmhouse nursery room (we have wood floors everywhere else) for a bunch of reasons: not only are wood floors chillier at night for feedings, but carpet brings a healthier aspect to the nursery and Easton’s sensitive nose. Allergies are common in our family, as is asthma, and having carpet in the nursery supports healthier living and improving air quality (goodbye dust bunnies). Carpet in your home can also dampen the sound of toys falling over, adults walking, and the pitter-patter of little feet, so your new baby can nap in peace in their beautiful new nursery. You can visit The Carpet & Rug Institute here to enter a sweepstakes to win a $500 Visa gift card to brighten up your nursery or any room of the house with fresh new carpet for the summer!

5 Reasons I Love Carpet (And Why You Should Too)

This post is part of CRI’s Spring 2020 Beauty of Carpet campaign. Read the full post at Home Made by Carmona.

Now more than ever we are seeing the importance of creating homes that act as a safe haven for our families. As we go through this tough time together, I’m glad we can take a moment to appreciate the little things, and reflect on how we can help our families (especially the children) feel a little safer in a turbulent time.

As our family has been staying home in the last couple weeks during the Coronavirus outbreak, I’ve found a new appreciation for the design choices I’ve made that allow us to be comfortable and cozy.

Today I thought I would share one of those design choices I have never regretted, and talk about the beauty of carpet in our spaces.

Carpeting is in style, and not a moment too soon for this family! Never once have we lost our love for carpet, because of it’s undeniable comfort under foot.

However, there are a myriad of other reasons carpet is my go-to choice when designing a space…

If you love the feel of carpet, but aren’t sure it’s for your home, I’m sharing my top 5 reasons I love carpet in my home. Today, we’re going to explore the beauty of carpet in the home.

#1. It’s Comfortable & Soft Underfoot

Once I asked my husband if he wanted me to consider installing wood floors in our bedroom… he looked at me like I was crazy and said “why do you hate my feet?”.

There is no doubt that our primary reason to love our carpeting is how soft and comfortable it is under foot. There is no denying that nothing is quite as pleasant to walk on than a carpeted floor.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve discovered that my bare feet on a hard ground hurts my feet and aggravates my back. Thankfully the extra padding under carpeting allows me to walk around without having to don special padded shoes.

#2. It Makes A Design Statement

Don’t think you are going to sacrifice design for comfort. It is absolutely not true… with all the designer carpeting styles out there, the options for color, style, and pattern are endless!

As crazy as it sounds, every bedroom in our home has slightly different carpet, and it looks amazing! Why? Because carpet, like every other design decision, should be a statement in the space. If every room has it’s unique decor style, then why not it’s own designer carpeting style?

The trick to keep the whole house cohesive rather than looking like a patchwork is the transition between the rooms. Additionally, keep the carpet color fairly cohesive throughout and simply change the pattern style.

#3. It Works For The Way We Live

It’s not unusual to find one of my daughters sprawled on the floor, reading a book, or working on a project. For whatever reason, they prefer the floor…

That makes a warm, comfortable, padding flooring a priority. No cold hard floors in these girls bedrooms! It’s important to design for the way we live!

#4. It Keeps The Noise To A Dull Roar

I have three girls, and let me tell you, when they are chatting, giggling, and having a good time, they get loud! When you work from home like I do, noise reduction is the holy grail of productivity.

Between the carpet and pad beneath, it acts like much like sound proofing barriers do, and helps keep that noise down to a more dull roar. Especially between our upstairs and downstairs!

#5. Carpet Reduces Allergens In The Air

I have quite a few allergies and sensitivities, so to stay misery-free, allergen reduction becomes an important part of my life.

Most people don’t realize this, but carpeting actually helps capture more of the particles and dust mites that are circulated through the air. Once trapped, less of it is in the air and can be readily disposed of with regular cleaning, such as vacuuming. And since we are always running ceiling fans in our home, carpeting was a must!

Of course, I’m not the expert when it comes to this topic… The Carpet & Rug Institute is the resident expert on all things carpets. You’ll find information on how and why carpeting is good for indoor air quality, and more.

Essential Spring Cleaning Tips + The Beauty of Carpet

This post is part of CRI’s Spring 2020 Beauty of Carpet campaign. Read the full post at A Blissful Nest.

Our home has wall-to-wall carpet and is a cozy space right at the top of the stairs. I think of it as the second heartbeat room of our home because we spend so much time up here.

So I decided to tackle this space with some essential spring cleaning before the makeover and partnered with The Carpet & Rug Institute to show how I pulled this room together with decor and a cozy foundation of carpeting.

Carpet provides beauty and style to any room

When we selected our carpet when we were building our home, I went for a neutral beige color I thought would go with any design. It adds a warm tone and makes the room feel cozy. I love that with carpet patterns and colors, a room can totally be transformed.

Carpet provides warmth and comfort

There is nothing like sinking your feet into soft plush carpeting especially in the colder weather. I love how comfortable and cushy it makes any room feel and especially in rooms like this where there is a lot of activity.

Carpet helps with noise reduction

We decided to add an air hockey table to our newly cleaned out game room and it is perfect for quality family time. We love playing it and it definitely helps with keeping Lauren off of tech stuff. But it does add a lot of noise to the house that I was able to conquer with carpeting.

Not only do I love the look of the carpet in this space but it is functional too. Because it can get pretty loud and crazy up here with some serious air hockey games (LOL!), our carpet helps with noise reduction and helps absorb the sound.

This really helps when I am downstairs and the sound travels down there. It really can be amplified on the lower level so our carpeting is a great buffer.

Carpet helps with indoor air quality

By improving indoor air quality, carpet supports healthier space for living, working and learning for everyone. New carpet is the lowest VOC-emitting flooring choice available. It acts as a passive air filter, trapping dust, pollen, and particles and then removing them from the air.

5 Tips to Spruce Up Your Master Bedroom

This post is part of CRI’s Spring 2020 Beauty of Carpet campaign. Read the full post at Love Your Abode.

I prepared this post weeks ago before all the craziness with the Covid-19 crisis that has hit our nation and world. With quarantines and social distancing in place, most of us have been spending a lot of time at home. Naturally, it has made me think about the importance of how our homes truly serve as a place of respite. With the changing of the seasons approaching, I love giving some of the spaces in our home a refresh. It doesn’t have to be complicated but these little updates can make our rooms feel new and fresh again. If you’re looking to update your space, here are my 5 tips to spruce up your master bedroom for spring. My hope is that you can find some of these tips useful in keeping your home a place of refuge, inspiration and joy.

Sleep is so important to our health isn’t it? Since we’re now working from home and juggling online school for the kids, I have been more conscientious about getting good sleep and trying to stay as healthy as possible. When it comes to the master bedroom, I want it to feel cozy and exude peace and warmth. I truly believe the master bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the home because it’s where Jimmy and I connect and find respite. Since our room is pretty large, I want it feel like a cocoon.

Anchor the Room with a Rug

Rugs help anchor furniture but also add warmth and color to a space. We love having carpet in our master bedroom because it helps with noise reduction and keeps our room feeling warm. I can’t stand the cold and so the carpet really helps maintain warmer temperatures during the colder months.
