Boggling Compensation: Dumb Ass Stupid Management
My good friend and colleague, Jody Irving, sent me list published in Washington, DC of the highest paid association CEOs. She asked me to guess who was at the top, and I said either the NRA or a teachers’ union.
Nope.
It’s SHRM (Society of Human Resources Management). The last guy in the role, Henry Jackson, made $9,540.155. That is not a misprint and I am not making that up. And that’s not counting a boatload of perks. That’s more by a factor of three than the pay of the CEO of, oh, the American Gas Association, the Nuclear Energy Institute, or the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing Association.
I believe HR is a vestigial organ of less use than an appendix. Unfortunately, there is no HRendectomy. And I still dare anyone to come up with three career HR executives who were named CEO of a Fortune 500 company in the past decade. You get my drift.
By the way, the second highest paid CEO was Jack Gerard, at two thirds of SHRM’s stipend, of the American Petroleum Institute. At least he’s lighting someone’s fire.
