Blog 53 Matter Vs Antimatter Kids Corner one of the biggest challenges in science today is why matter and antimatter were not made equal quantities, which would have wipe everything out or turned all mass into energy? Solve this and win a Nobel Prize! I will be here to help you. Just ask any questions. By award-winning author, adventurer and scientist Mark Kingston Levin PhD

Figure 1. If there are other universe of antimatter, then you could meet your anti-twin. It could cause a serious explosion that could destroy a country like Belgium.

Theoretical physicist Paul Dirac proposed the existence of antimatter in 1928 after three years of getting up the courage by studying all other possibilities. Antimatter when it touches a like particle of matter turns into pure energy instantly. Why do they not eliminate each other? Carl Anderson confirmed the existence of antimatter, which meant Dirac was on right track even though Einstein and some scientists thought he might be mad, He should have received a Nobel Prize for this alone.

Dirac did so much to develop Quantum Mechanics he shared the prize with Erwin Schrodinger for quantum theory contributions.

The basic physics principles usually work equally well in reverse, if you have a prodigious quantity of energy, it can convert into exactly equal amounts of matter and antimatter. Why was the antimatter limited somehow? We do not know. Maybe some kid studying science today on the internet or in class will find out if she or he knows the challenge now. Excite him or her by presenting this problem in an interesting fashion.

A particle and its anti-particle (e.g., proton and anti-proton) have the same mass as one another, but opposite electric charge and other differences in quantum numbers. For example, a proton has positive charge while an anti-proton has negative charge. A collision between any particle and its anti-particle partner is known to lead to their mutual annihilation, giving rise to various proportions of intense photons (gamma rays), neutrinos, and sometimes less-massive particle–antiparticle pairs.

There are compelling theoretical reasons to believe that, aside from the fact that antiparticles have different signs on all charges (such as electric charge and spin), matter and antimatter have the same chemical properties. This means a particle and its corresponding antiparticle must have identical masses and decay lifetimes (if unstable). It also implies that, for example, a star made up of antimatter (an “antistar”) will shine just like an ordinary star. This idea was tested experimentally in 2016 by the ALPHA experiment, which measured the transition between the two lowest energy states of antihydrogen. The results, which are identical to that of hydrogen, confirmed the validity of quantum mechanics for antimatter.

Figure 3. Angels and Demons Sci-Fi story about ANTIMATTER as a weapon: No!” Vittoria said from above, breathless. “We must evacuate right now! You cannot take the antimatter out of here! If you bring it up, everyone outside will die!”

Angels and Demons book was written by the science fiction author Dan Brown, Pocket Books. It was a great read and five stars.
