Avoid the Motivation Trap: How Leaders Can Effectively Motivate Their Followers

"There is no such thing as an unmotivated employee," according to leadership expert Stephen Balzac, president of management consulting firm 7 Steps Ahead and author of The 36-Hour Course in Organizational Development. "The problem is that they may not be motivated to do what we want them to do."

The problem with motivating employees is that most employers are in the back pushing or they are trying to drag their teams forward. When the employers stop pushing or pulling, the employees stop moving. If you want to motivate your employees successfully, you need to get them excited and then get out of their way.

"That's hardly a radical idea," observes Balzac. "However, despite the number of people who will tell you that's what you should do, hardly anyone tells you how to do it."

In a recent webinar sponsored by ERE Media, Balzac does just that. Based on material in his book, Balzac identified seven powerful motivational techniques employers can start using immediately.

"Motivation isn't rocket science," commented Balzac. "It requires steady, solid effort. If you do that, you get results. There are no magic bullets."

If you want to keep your employees motivated, Balzac's suggestions are an extremely effective way to go about it. Not only do they get results, they require considerably less effort than most employers are already expending for very little result.

"Effective motivation is like watching a 75 year old judo master effortlessly throwing all comers," Balzac commented with a laugh. "It looks like magic, but once you understand the principles it's easy."
