The lack of service today among many types of businesses is mind-boggling and raises today’s blog topic, ‘Are you unknowingly harming your business?’ It’s no secret that the key to future success is retaining current clients as we continue to build out our networks to attract the new.

Caring about your clientele and serving them well is the ultimate goal for all businesses. We did experience ‘the Great Resignation.’ However, it is not an excuse for not doing well by our clientele. For larger companies, leadership and service begin with attentiveness to your employees via training them to serve others well.

My Story:

 The theory that ‘no one will notice if I…’ is untrue, as is that of a larger company believing an individual cannot do anything about their dilemma. The opposite is accurate, and the backlash of poor client service can and will haunt you in various ways, including a severe downturn in business and the potential need to file for bankruptcy.

Whether you are an employee, a business owner, or a mega-corporation CEO, the effort begins with you. You are entirely in charge of your position, and many eyes will be watching how you perform. 

‘Your performance will either haunt or honor you. It is essential always to do and provide your best for your brand to flourish.

Expanding upon the issue, you are the conductor for your future. How you conduct yourself and your company, plus the lack of or rigid follow-through of promises, will become word-of-mouth content for others to repeat. Therefore, consistency, honesty, and integrity are essential for all capacities.

Long ago, corporate discrimination was rampant—the dismal experiences providing me with stories for books and blogs. Sadly, the same continues.

This week, I called a professional firm of which I am a client to update some paperwork. I was asked for my phone number twice and told it might be two hours until I heard back. The next day, I called again and asked to provide the same information.  

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion topics are near and dear to me. It was stunning that on the second day, at 5:00 p.m., a message was left on my husband’s phone. The following day, a female receptionist answered the phone. I let her know what transpired was highly discriminatory and deeply concerning. The receptionist sounded as if she fully understood every word coming across. Shortly afterward, a call came through on my phone to arrange an appointment for both of us.

Aretha Franklin always has my applause, but her words, “All I want is a little respect,” have more meaning than you can imagine and are undoubtedly true for millions of others.

You are likely doing everything in your power to succeed in business. Circumstances out of our control are hitting everyone more than ever, such as heatwaves, fires, the coronavirus, and the list continues. The old saying I learned in Junior High School is as applicable as ever: It’s all about ‘Survival of the fittest.’

As a society, our environment and technology continue to change, and everyone must adapt to the new in the best way possible. For business and sales, it is essential to listen carefully to what others say so that we may give our best in the capacity we represent. Seeking a greater understanding of those you encounter is the key to securing additional sales.

In Conclusion:

First and foremost, it will be wise to review all practices within your business and examine habits practiced by yourself and your staff. All staff must receive training on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. When we are willing to communicate and listen fully to people different from ourselves, we can learn much more and transfer the knowledge to a more robust output for the business.
