As we age, it becomes almost alarming to realize that our previous best strategies are no longer acceptable in a new age. Once again, the phrase ‘survival of the fittest’ comes to mind; adaptation to a new tomorrow is critical. Today’s example is accepting that AI, cybersecurity, and all associated strategies are upon us, and adapting is vital.

My Story

As a college student, I heard tutoring was a common way to earn extra income. I decided to offer my help with math. I researched the going rate and called several people. ‘No thanks!’ was the only response I heard.

Frustration set in, so I decided to give calling one more try, but one item changed. I tested the market by doubling the fee. The first person asked, ‘How soon can you come?’ 

Initial Sales Lessons:

  1. Know the value you bring and differentiate yourself from everyone else.
  2. Verbalize how you can assist the other person or company.
  3. Always be daring to try something new!

Two other very successful entrepreneurships followed. The repeat business was due to my getting to know others professionally and softening conversations with stories about related experiences, they might enjoy. 

Intertwining previous experience, I always researched the ‘going rate.’ Focusing on the value I would provide to my prospects’ businesses and outlining how I differed from the top-known competition, I could stand my ground and request monetary remuneration on the high end.

Corporate Sales

At my first sales job, the ‘Leadership’ told me to my face that I was just another stupid woman who would fail and that it would be a waste of money to train me. I smiled, viewing it as a blessing in disguise that I wasn’t permitted sales training. What they didn’t know was that inside, I was heartily laughing! Why? They instantly gave me the green light to do things my way, and that’s exactly what I did!

Corporate Sales Lessons

As a teenager, I enjoyed the play The King and I and made a note of Julie Andrews’s song, ‘Getting to Know You:’

Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you like me.”

‘A breath of fresh air’ became my nickname as prospects and clients disliked traditional hard sales tactics. Being professionally friendly upfront was my differentiator and my success strategy. The style encourages deeper conversations to learn from one another and realize the best way forward on all counts. Ultimately, not only did we enjoy one another’s company, but it earned a returning and referring clientele, eliminating the stress of worrying about meeting the sales quota to become a Smooth Sale!
