I use the terms “poverty mentality” and “scarcity mentality” interchangeably, both being the opposite of an abundance mentality. A lot of people think I mean spending money as the metric here. I do not.
There’s no question that if someone looks at a check on the table amidst a group as if it were a boa constrictor coiled to strike, that is a question of money. And if your response to “What would you do if you had an extra $250,000?” is “Never touch it!”, well, that’s also about money.
But I’m basically referring to the willingness to take time out of your “work day” to enjoy yourself—walk the dog, watch some TV, take a swim, play the guitar. I’m talking about taking vacations of more than a week, or only working 30 hours a week. I’m referring to the horrid practice of desperately trying to work two hours a week less, and then filling the saved two hours……with more work!
I mean that you should harbor no feelings of guilt, or shame, or fear. You shouldn’t be uncomforable meeting someone new or threatened by an assertive voice. There’s no reason to “hide” your good fortune or accomplishements—I’m not talking about flagrant bragging, but merely understandable human pride.
If you’re ever caught in these conundrums, use the question my wife and I have used for a long time: “If not now, when?”
