At this point in my career, I've heard every excuse imaginable to defend a poor attempt or a lack of attention.

The Devil made me do it. I'm overwhelmed. No one is around at the holidays (or over the summer). Your instructions weren't clear. Everyone is “ghosting” me, said lachrymosely.

But here's one that really irks me from “successful” people: “Look, Alan, I really never have to make any more money,” is one of the most ridiculous excuses I've ever heard for failure to market, or missing deadlines, or non-responsiveness. If your  implication is that you're so rich that rules and demeanor of professionalism and civility really aren't all that important, then why are we even talking? Why don't you simply “retire” and watch TV until you die? Or, travel the world and see the sites until you've seen them all?

The truth is that we “work,” whether for money or interest or socialization or personal growth, to provide meaning for our lives and, one would hope, for others. Life is not a “search for meaning,” it's about creating meaning.

And I don't care how much money you think you have. I can always make another dollar, but I can't make another minute.

About 20 years ago my wife made an appointment with a financial expert because she was concerned that we weren't handling our finances optimally. “When would Alan be able to retire?” she asked. The expert reviewed her notes, looked up, and said, “As far as I can tell, Alan has been retired according to most definitions for about ten years.

Stop telling me your financial resources make you immune to discipline and responsibility. Real wealth is discretionary time, so why not use that wealth to help others by continuing to contribute to the community and society around you?

I've always believed that we have no right to consume happiness and wealth unless we also create happiness and wealth.

LAST CALL! The Fishbowl: In January I’ll be starting a year-long, monthly, “live” coaching session whereby one member of the group will be coached by me for 45 minutes on a current issue of theirs, we’ll deconstruct what happened, and then have 45 minutes of Q&A. This is a variation of the very popular “fishbowl” technique I ran a few years ago.

You may volunteer to be the person coached or simply watch. You needn’t attend every session and I will provide video to everyone afterwards along with written commentary. This should build your coaching prowess considerably.
