Why I’m Sure I Have Barbarian Roots

• I’m happy watching the soccer highlights clips, I can’t stand the tedium in between the rare scoring. And “nil” is just a dumb term, sort of like “zed.” I love the American women’s aggressiveness. I’m glad they won.

• I find that using a string of initials to define your cause actually undermines and ridicules the movement. Why not briefly say what you mean?

• I’ve not heard two consecutive sentences from any candidate in either party at any level over the past decade that I believe or would bet the family farm on coming true. Politicians are worse panhandlers than the people with the hand-drawn signs on the street corners.

• Reruns of Law and Order are far superior to any new broadcast TV series by a long shot.

• We tend to blame generational differences for people not understanding certain references, but I blame it on inferior education.

• It is tragic, but hardly surprising, that there are tornadoes in the interior, coastal flooding, earthquakes along major fault lines, and fires in tracts of huge forests. If you choose to live there, you’re accepting the risk.

• How long before they pass the laws the saying “God Bless You” after a sneeze as hate speech because some benighted passerby’s life is demeaned by hearing it?

• By this time shouldn’t someone have invented a button to press that does the same thing as crawling on the floor and unplugging, and then plugging back in, the electronic device?

• We once protested without euphemisms, and were proud of it. We staged illegal protests, not “undocumented” protests. Shouldn’t you stand in the wind and not hide behind words?

• I never thought Trump would be nominated, and then never thought he’d win the election. Then I figured he wouldn’t run again, or would run and lose a second term. Now, I’m not so sure. I question whether the other side can win on a platform of wanting to give away the store.

• They’re talking about an electric commuter plane by 2024 or so, which would have a range of several hundred miles on a single charge, between Boston or Providence and Nantucket, for example. I’m thinking that, in the not-so-unlikely event of an emergency, instead of oxygen masks, extension cords will drop from above.

Not everyone deserves a trophy. — Saying on a tee-shirt my family gave me and which I’m currently wearing at the beach.
