I grew up on fiction books, I loved seeing the adventures and worlds in them unfold and still do. Seeing the main characters, kids my own age doing incredible things, overcoming inhuman forces whether through wit or pure chance. All of it intrigued me and pulled me in.

As a child and well through my teens, Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, and the Bartimaeus Trilogy dominated my imagination. I couldn’t get enough of them. When I entered middle school, I envisioned myself as a writer and an author-to-be. New ideas led to new worlds, possibilities opened up and I saw what could be.. Even throughout high school when it was insisted that I started working toward building a future for myself, I found myself spending far more time in my own head then working on the papers that were being assigned.

I came to what I thought was a realization when I graduated, that only published authors could make proper money on the worlds they created in their heads, so long as they got them out on paper … or at least a computer as a starting point. That was my “oh-oh” moment …  the odds of me accomplishing that were slim to none unless something kicked me forward.

That “forward” took another nine years.  Now in my third year of college, I had a chance meeting with another student. Talking with my advisor, he encouraged me to talk with another student who had interned with a company in the Denver area. Suddenly, I transitioned from what I’m going to do with all these ideas that have been partying in my head to finding an internship with AuthorYOU and The Book Shepherd.. Within the first week, I learned that that “realization” from years before was nothing more than misunderstanding how publishing works and that there are other options outside of traditional publishers.

This summer, I attended the Book Publishing Unplugged event. At it, I learned about independent and self-publishing in full. It was an overwhelming amount of information, but it put into perspective that so long as you know what you’re doing, you don’t need to rely on traditional publishers to be successful. I’ve also found that I know nothing about social media and marketing and didn’t realize how vital they were as skills to have until the event— I will be joining the Book Marketing Unplugged event in October to help learn these.

Between all the information and all the various authors and people who work in publishing that I met at the event, I’ve never been so sure that this is what I want to do with my life. This is something I want to be part of and will work my butt off to put all these worlds swimming around in my head, into published books. This will be my world.

I’m a newbie … but not forever.
